Position Summary
The Director, IT Governance, Portfolio, Capacity & Demand Management, will be a key member of the WashU IT PPMO leadership team. As a member of the leadership team, this position will be accountable for development of strategy, cross functional team collaboration, continuous innovation, and supporting the operational needs of the organization for IT Governance, strategic portfolio alignment, demand for IT services and support, and capacity planning and forecasting. This critical role will work collaboratively across WashU IT and its Distributed IT partners to ensure demand for IT projects and services is captured through IT governance processes, resulting projects are captured and prioritized in the IT project portfolio, and required resources are strategically allocated and forecasted. Utilizing a Center of Excellence (CoE) approach, this Director will drive effective data driven decision making in the organization, moving our team, from diagnostic to leveraging advanced scenario planning and predictive analytics capabilities, promoting a digital culture and ensuring a robust data management strategy to sustain the health of the planning environment.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
Practice Framework, Tools and Processes
- Establish and utilize standard capacity and demand management processes and procedures to forecast, plan for and manage the demand for WashU IT resources and services.
- Lead the socialization of processes and procedures to capture business demand through the intake of ideas and project proposals.
- Collaborate with WashU IT department leaders in the development of project proposals and submission for governance review, from idea to proposal, through the funding approval process.
- Collaborate with IT Governance Committee Chairs, Subcommittee Chairs, WU IT Leadership, and Program Managers to develop, implement, and report on project prioritization through IT Governance processes and procedures.
- Establish and monitor Service-Level Agreements (SLAs) for all intake processes.
- Provide visibility into demand against current capacity for governance domains.
- Lead the development and execution of a strategic roadmap for tools and processes to support governance, portfolio, demand, and capacity management.
- Provide visibility for senior management into effectiveness of IT processes and tools.
- Perform process maturity assessments regularly to gauge success of the IT Governance, Portfolio Management, and Capacity/Demand Management team.
- Ensure responsiveness to our governance chairs and committee members.
- Provide recommendations and alternatives to drive active engagement and participation in committee meetings.
Data and Analytics
- Lead the development of domain and department-level dashboards including intake, demand, capacity, resource allocation, and strategic roadmaps.
- Provide analysis of portfolio, capacity, and demand data to support strategic decision making of the WashU IT Senior Leadership Team.
- Collaborate with the Senior Director, WU IT PPMO and other WU IT leaders to ensure demand for Business Analysts, Project, and Program Managers are monitored and reflected in Capacity and Demand reporting.
- Support the development of program and department specific reports and dashboards.
- Enhance tools as needed to incorporate new/improved metrics.
- Establish and facilitate monthly global demand management reviews.
Leadership
- Participate in strategic planning for the department.
- Lead strategic planning for IT Governance, Portfolio, Demand, and Capacity management.
- Ensure adherence of services to departmental and university service standards.
- Act as a source of direction, training and guidance for less experienced staff.
- Lead recruiting and staff supervision: set expectations, monitor progress and provide formal and informal feedback.
- Provide guidance for professional development.
Manage Vendors and External Service Providers within Span of Control

Salary Range
$110,300.00 - $194,200.00 / Annually
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
