Job Description Summary:

Responsible for organizing and coordinating technical personnel, in order to ensure appropriate delivery of radiation therapy. Responsible for accurate application of ionizing radiation to the patient in accordance with the prescription and instructions of the Radiation Oncologist. Under the medical direction of the Radiation Oncologist, responsible for organizing and participating in the daily delivery of radiation therapy services by coordinating personnel and their activities. Employee is responsible for performing radiation therapist duties as well as supervisory duties as assigned. Employee is subject to call back and overtime as required by the hospital.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Verifies and accurately delivers the prescribed planned course of radiation therapy according to the radiation oncologist with minimum supervision.

  • Assigns and monitors work, organizes daily operations functions, and coordinates work and patient flow in cooperation with the nurse staff and physicians. Able to correct and instruct staff where technical deficiencies are noted.

  • Assists director with technical performance evaluations. Assists and performs technical improvement activities to ensure quality is consistent with established standards.

  • Monitors technical performance standards for the department.  Performs warm-up procedures regularly to assure proper equipment performance, reporting any variance to physicist.  Maintains technical compliance with monthly variance reporting and assists with development and implementation of improvement processes.

  • Participates in the team approach with regards to the management of the Radiation Oncology Department.  Develops and maintains a positive work climate and enhances the overall team effort of the department.

  • Provides leadership through participation in Cancer Center and hospital events.

  • Remains current with technological upgrades.

  • Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.

  • Able to efficiently utilize the Electronic Medical Record in all aspects of daily operations.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

  • Skill and proficiency in the technical field of Radiation Therapy and Radiography, this must include high competency in radiation physics, dosimetry, and radiation injury.  Such proficiency is normally acquired through the completion of an accredited AMA approved Radiation Therapy Technology Program post ARRT license. Lead Therapist may also have a BS degree in radiation science along with a limited x-ray license of adequate areas of the anatomy. At least an AAS degree in Radiological Sciences is required.

  • ARRT Certification in Radiation Therapy required.

  • BS in Radiological Sciences or Mathematics preferred.

LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION:

  • Must be Registered as a Radiation Therapy Technologist by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) and possess an appropriate state license. Also, must be registered as a Radiologic Technologist if radiation therapy training was obtained from a 12 month program or obtain a limited x-ray license of appropriate areas of anatomy if radiation therapy training was in a Bachelors accredited Radiation Therapy program. License must be kept current at all times while in this position.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Knowledge and ability to operate all radiation therapy equipment and perform all radiation therapy procedures and knowledge of hospital and departmental policies and procedures as normally acquired through 3 months of orientation.

  • Minimum of 2 years clinical experience in a facility providing full radiation therapy services with a full-time radiation oncologist on staff.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Capable of fabricating detailed custom blocks, molds, stents, and casts as directed by patient’s needs.

  • Knowledge and skills obtained through training, to operate successfully, the Electronic Medical Record with the Radiation Oncology Dept.
