The HR Operations Specialist is responsible for delivering efficient, accurate, and compliant HR operational services across the employee lifecycle. The role ensures seamless execution of HR processes, supports business continuity, and enhances employee experience through effective service delivery, systems optimisation, and adherence to South African labour legislation.

This role plays a critical part in enabling a high-performing HR function by maintaining data integrity, supporting HR systems (e.g. Workday), and ensuring that all HR operations are aligned to company policies, governance frameworks, and regulatory requirements.

1. HR Service Delivery & Employee Lifecycle Management

  • Execute end-to-end HR operational processes including onboarding, employee changes, and offboarding

  • Ensure all employee data is accurately captured, maintained, and updated in HR systems (e.g. Workday)

  • Prepare employment contracts, addendums, and HR-related documentation in line with company policy and legislation

  • Provide first-line HR support to employees and line managers, resolving queries efficiently

2. HR Systems & Data Management

  • Maintain high levels of data integrity and accuracy across HR systems

  • Generate standard and ad hoc HR reports to support decision-making

  • Support system enhancements, testing, and continuous improvement initiatives

  • Ensure proper document management and audit readiness of HR records

3. Payroll & Benefits Administration

  • Provide accurate and timely input to payroll, including new hires, terminations, and changes to employee data

  • Liaise with payroll and benefits providers to resolve discrepancies and queries

  • Support the administration of employee benefits (e.g. medical aid, provident fund, leave management)

  • Ensure compliance with statutory requirements (e.g. PAYE, UIF, SDL)

4. Compliance & Governance

  • Ensure all HR processes comply with South African labour legislation, including the BCEA, LRA, and POPIA

  • Maintain audit trails and ensure HR documentation is complete and compliant

  • Support internal and external audits by providing required HR information and documentation

  • Adhere to company policies, procedures, and governance frameworks

5. Reporting & Analytics

  • Compile HR metrics and reports (e.g. headcount, turnover, leave, performance tracking)

  • Provide insights to HR and business stakeholders to support workforce planning and decision-making

  • Support regulatory and internal reporting requirements

6. Continuous Improvement & Employee Experience

  • Identify opportunities to streamline HR processes and improve service delivery

  • Contribute to HR projects and digital transformation initiatives

  • Support initiatives that enhance employee experience and engagement

Qualifications & Experience

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Human Resources or related field

  • Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in an HR operations or HR generalist role

  • Experience working in a large, complex organisation (preferably within energy, industrial, or unionised environments)

  • Experience working with HR systems (e.g. Workday or similar)
