Position Overview

The Vice President of Product Development will drive the design, development, and enhancement of insurance products and forms across multiple lines of business, including Property & Casualty and Specialty Programs. This role requires collaboration with Underwriting, Product Line Management, Compliance, Claims, and Actuarial teams to ensure products are competitive, compliant and aligned with corporate objectives. The VP will manage a team of attorneys and drafters and will oversee the team’s role in product lifecycle management, regulatory forms filings and Speed-To-Market initiatives.  

Key Responsibilities

Product Strategy & Form Development

  • Lead the development, implementation, and communication of form development to deliver profitable, compliant, and marketable General Liability, Commercial Automobile, Commercial Umbrella/Excess, and Commercial Property/Inland Marine products.

  • Provide legal oversight and subject matter expertise for drafting policy form language and preparing coverage analyses on such lines of business.

  • Identify and implement best practices to ensure proper and consistent form development and compliance while meeting business goals.

  • Leverage resources, technology, and processes to drive innovation within the team.

Regulatory, Market, and Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Partner with Compliance to support forms filings by providing necessary materials, information, and forms-related guidance, ensuring efficient handoffs of final forms and supporting documentation for Compliance use.

  • Engage, manage, and maintain relationships with Product Line Management, Underwriting, Compliance, Claims, Actuarial, and other stakeholders to monitor and share knowledge on market trends, regulatory impacts, legal changes, and loss developments.

People Leadership & Operational Management

  • Manage staff performance and development; implement strategies to address staff growth and training needs on an ongoing basis.

  • Develop and manage regular report-outs on the team’s work (e.g., key accomplishments, status, throughput, and cycle-time drivers) tailored to leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.

  • Maintain metrics and tracking mechanisms to monitor operational performance and identify continuous improvement opportunities.

  • Assist with development of annual operational goals and objectives for Corporate Underwriting/Product.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated people management and development skills in a service management role.

  • Detailed technical knowledge of General Liability, Umbrella/Excess, Commercial Automobile and Commercial Property/Inland Marine with the ability to advise, train, and manage staff.

  • Hands-on experience and strong aptitude with Microsoft Word, Excel, SharePoint and PowerPoint.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication, influencing, negotiating, listening, and interpersonal skills.

  • Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, analytical, organizational, and time management skills; ability to analyze, organize, and present information clearly.

  • Ability to participate in active strategic discussions and to work independently and in a team environment.

Education and Experience

  • Juris Doctor (JD); admitted to a state bar in good standing.

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in insurance product development, underwriting, regulatory legal, or related fields.

  • Willing and able to travel approximately 15–20%.

  • This position is a hybrid role.

For individuals assigned or hired to work in the location(s) indicated below, the base salary range is provided. Range is as of the time of posting. Position is incentive eligible.

$166,900 - $225,300/year

  • Total individual compensation (base salary, short & long-term incentives) offered will take into account a number of factors including but not limited to geographic location, scope & responsibilities of the role, qualifications, talent availability & specialization as well as business needs. The above pay range may be modified in the future.
