PLANT OPERATOR/CDL CLASS A PLANT BACKUP DRIVER

The Plant Operator/Back-up Driver ensures safe filling of industrial, medical, and specialty gas products into liquid gas cylinders, complying with regulations and Airgas' standard operating procedures. This role may also involve performing back-up duties as a Driver and Administrative support when needed.

Job Description:

Safety and Compliance:

  • Demonstrate and prioritize Airgas' Safety Pledge and 12 Life Saving Rules.

  • Promote and practice safe work behaviors.

  • Comply with OSHA, FDA, DOT, EPA, and other regulatory requirements.

  • Perform pre and post trip vehicle inspections, maintaining compliance with safety standards.

Plant Operator Responsibilities:

  • Safely operate and maintain equipment for pumping or repackaging gases into cylinders.

  • Conduct pre-fill and post-fill inspections, adhering to standard procedures.

  • Fill cylinders accurately, maintain records, and ensure regulatory compliance.

  • Maintain a clean and orderly plant appearance.

Backup Driver Responsibilities:

  • Deliver compressed gas cylinders and liquid cylinders to customers on a scheduled route.

  • Load and unload trucks, pick up empty cylinders, and return them to the plant for refilling.

  • Maintain proper vehicle documentation and a professional appearance.

Additional Duties:

  • Perform safety checks and assist with inventory and housekeeping.

  • Support other plant areas as required.

Qualifications and Competencies:

  • Strong customer service and communication skills.

  • Self-motivated, well-organized, and detail-oriented.

  • Ability to work independently and handle pressure.

  • Familiarity with safety data sheets and ability to follow instructions.

  • No disqualifications from driving a commercial motor vehicle within the last seven years.

  • Minimal driving violations in the last three years.

  • Class A or B CDL with HazMat endorsement and airbrakes required.

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of 12 months' experience with Straight Truck or Bulk Straight Truck or Driving School Certificate.

  • Industry knowledge and experience handling compressed gases preferred.

  • Customer service or sales experience is a plus.

Computer Skills:

  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) preferred.

  • Experience with onboarding computers is a plus.

Travel Requirements:

  • Minimal (0 – 10%).

Communication and Critical Thinking Skills:

  • Effective written and verbal communication.

  • Strong problem-solving skills in situations with limited standardization.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • CDL, Class A or B with airbrakes; HazMat endorsement required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Must have at least one year of CDL Class A or B  driving experience with like equipment or graduated from an accredited truck driving school.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions.
