JOB PURPOSE:
An Electric Powertrain (ePowertrain) includes a power source such as battery and possibly fuel cell, power electronics, and electric drivetrain components combined via controls into an electric powertrain system. As a Principal Product Architect in the ePowertrain Systems team, you will be joining an innovative team on the cutting edge of electrification. The ePowertrain Systems team is part of the Electrification & Energy Solutions Division and is a full electric powertrain solution partner for all Caterpillar machines. You will be responsible for architecting e-powertrain solutions across multiple NTI/NPI programs and will work with L6 Product Groups, L5 ePowertrain system, and L3-L4 component technical leads to support their programs with Requirements Definition, with validation leads to support FMEA based planning, and PPRD to ensure proper validation of advanced ePowertrain components and systems supporting a wide variety of new product development and new technology investigation projects. Your role will be critical to establishing e-architecting excellence in the ePowertrain systems and solutions domain, delivering world-class solutions, and mentoring and coaching team members.
What you will do:
Lead product architecting & strategy of full electric powertrain configurations for a diverse range of machine platforms and collaborate with teams to define and meet targets for deliverables and timing of virtual, laboratory, and testbed demonstrators.
Collaborate with other product architecting principals, stewards and chief engineers to develop innovative and optimally sized ePowertrain power path configurations & concepts with various types of electric machines, power sources, power conversion and distribution systems, and electro-mechanical-hydraulic components including transmissions & braking systems.
Partner with Caterpillar’s product engineering groups and other stakeholders to develop modular, scalable, and leverageable components for ePowertrain in support enterprise electrification growth, platforming, and component strategy
Develop/deploy scalable component models for sub systems and components associated with power electronic and magnetic devices, electric motors, power sources, brakes, multi-stage planetary and multi-speed electro-mechanical transmissions and electric variants of hydrostatic/hydro-mechanical transmissions to drive product strategy decisions.
Improve upon or synthesize new electric powertrain system, sub-system and component designs using sound engineering first principles.
Collaborate with CAT internal teams and third-party suppliers to developed new methods, frameworks, and processes to architect and validate innovative e-solutions & facilitate development of process frameworks and best practices.
Collaborate with stakeholders to drive engineering advancements and innovations in areas such as e-drivetrain power path development, power conversion system/component topologies, power source architecting, optimal and model predictive control strategies, with a focus on RD&E efficiency, aftermarket growth, first fit differentiation.
Perform high level engineering design calculations related to loading, basic stress and fatigue life calculations, power source, drivetrain and cooling system sizing calculations for general system, component and control tradeoff analysis and product architecting and simulation framework development for electrified powertrains for xEV’s.
What you have:
Degree Requirements: Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace, Energy/Power Systems Engineering or equivalent
Product Development Life Cycle: Experience leading a proof-of-concept/concept to production launch on electric drive systems, sub systems and/or components.
Analytical Thinking: Experienced in design of experiments and tradeoff analysis associated with electric powertrain/power system design, control. Ability to develop and provide solutions for significant technical challenges in these areas.
Decision Making and Critical Thinking: Significant experience evaluating and specifying system architecture and control application requirements for electric/hybrid electric powertrain/power systems.
Computer-Aided Design & Engineering: Extensive background in model-based engineering using simulation platforms such as MATLAB/SIMULINK/Simscape, AMESim, GT Suite, Ansys, Optislang, HEEDS or similar tool chains, ideally as applied to electric powertrain applications.
Effective Communications: Communicates complex ideas and concepts in a clear and concise manner so that others can understand. Exhibits depth and breadth of knowledge, skill, and experience in the relevant field.
Project Management: Ability to set and meet appropriate deadlines as it relates to all phases of the product development cycle ensuring effective utilization of global resources.

This position will sit from the Mossville, IL office.
This position would require up to 25% travel.
