Who will you be working with?

L&M Radiator, Inc. is a global designer, manufacturer, and distributor of MESABI cooling and heat transfer solutions that are custom-made for heavy equipment in the mining, oil, gas, construction and heavy industrial industries. We are looking for an individual to join our Steel Prep team. This position will work directly with other members in the Steel Prep department, the Steel Prep Supervisor, Welding, Assembly, and the Cage, and may work with suppliers regarding materials.

How will you make a difference?

As a Laser Programmer of the Steel Prep team, you will have the opportunity to work with various tools and equipment – Bystronic Laser, press brakes, shears, torches, hydraulic saw, drill presses, MIG welder, forklifts, overhead cranes, and other equipment provided. You will be responsible for the proper use and care of the Bystronic Laser. This includes but is not limited to operating, programming, cleaning, and providing preventative maintenance on the laser. This role directly reports to the Steel Prep Supervisor.

What do we want to know about you?

  • High School Diploma or GED with 1 year of experience working in a steel manufacturing setting.
  • 1 year of experience working with SolidWorks or similar Drafting software preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • 18 years or older.
  • Computer experience.
  • Organizational skills.

What will your typical day look like?

  • Operate laser table and follow all safety requirements of the machine.
  • Inspect the steel storage rack and notify the cage to have the rack re-filled if there is an insufficient amount of material to keep up with production demands.
  • Clean and/or change out slats on the table and operate the slate cleaner equipment.
  • Separate and organize scrap material and adjust and resize remnants to reduce waste.
  • Run laser tests, calibrate equipment, and check fiber optics.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on laser.
  • Clean and sort burned material by sales order number or order number.
  • Load and unload material onto laser table.
  • Ensure plate storage rack.
  • Daily tasks:
    • Conduct a Tape Shot per the Trumpf Operators Manual.
    • Ensure all compressors and tanks are in working order.
    • Keep laser and components clean.
    • Clean out the conveyor catch trays both front and rear.
    • Sweep out all debris under the laser shuttle bed and ensure that the floor below the bed is free of parts, scrap and metal dust.
    • Clear off all cut sheets on the bed.
    • Sweep up debris around the laser, dust collectors, nitrogen generators, chillers, and steel storage racks.
    • Complete daily gauge checks on the oxygen and nitrogen tanks.
    • Load a new sheet of steel onto the shuttle bed for the upcoming shift.
    • Ensure plate storage rack is stocked.
    • Operate overhead crane, forklift and vacuum plate lifter for transporting materials.
    • Wipe down the PC monitor, keyboard, and the exterior of the machine and components.
    • Empty out scrap steel bin when needed.
  • Weekly tasks:
    • Verify the quality of cuts weekly by cutting and measuring test parts.
    • Clean out the disposal bag in the source capture fume extractor.
    • Remove slag and remnants on bulkhead grid sheets, sidewalls, conveyors and flaps.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area.
  • Perform work safely and follow all safety guidelines and procedures.
  • Willingness to learn new skills, cross train into other areas, and operate hand tools and power tools when needed.
  • Domestic and international travel possible depending on the project.
  • Create and build shipping crates for finished products.
  • Other duties as assigned per supervisor request.

What about the physical demands of the job?

  • Wear correct PPE – earplugs, protective eye wear, steel-toed boots, and work provided uniform (gloves when necessary)
  • Lift a minimum of 50lbs.
  • Stand on concrete for 8-10 hours.
  • Drive forklifts in a safe, controlled manner.
  • Work in high heat conditions.
  • Read and follow instructions and blueprints.
  • Ability to learn and understand bend standards
  • Practice and maintain safe work conditions.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required for Entry Level:

  • Regular and reliable attendance.
  • Must be able to read blueprints.
  • Ability to understand and carry out simple oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate, in English, effectively and clearly by both written and verbal means.
  • Basic computer skills needed.
  • Ability to stay organized, meet deadlines, and multitask.
  • Knowledge of basic math skills.
  • Read tape measures, calipers, and micrometers.
  • Confident in using hand and power tools.
  • Ability to learn and advance quickly.
  • Good at problem solving.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment written math test, physical, drug and background test.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office 365, Epicor or similar ERP system.
  • Experience in Lean Manufacturing preferred.

You may also be asked to perform other duties outside of your function or trade, for which adequate training will be provided if necessary.

This role is also eligible for a performance bonus.
