General Description:

Under general direction, responsible for the planning, coordination of resources and control of activities of laboratory services for Transplant and Transfusion services. Promotes and leads initiatives to standardize services between facilities to ensure efficient and high quality care.  The manager is expected to perform job duties independently within established department and hospital policies.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Is responsible for the accreditation application related to their area of responsibility.
  • Ensures the management of equipment, materials, and supplies required in the section.  Ensures proper maintenance of equipment is performed and documented.
  • Reports to the Lab Administrative Director and performs delegated tasks.
  • Provides leadership and mentoring to department supervisors and leaders.
  • Complies with and enforces all hospital and laboratory safety policies and procedures including the appropriate use of PPE.
  • Review monthly schedule to ensure adequate staffing.  Requests travelers or special compensation as necessary during exceptional and extended shortages.
  • Coordinates the review of new technology and instrumentation along with the section medical/scientific director.  Develops criteria for review and is responsible for the final recommendation and presentation to lab and hospital leadership.
  • Assumes responsibility of own professional development and acts as a mentor for others. Regularly rounds with staff to develop individualized plans for their development based on their own career goals.
  • Reviews monthly/quarterly reports for accuracy. Reviews QC data and coordinates corrective actions with the supervisor and medical director. Monitors overdue or pending logs for barriers and trends to timely patient reporting.  Submits logs to appropriate electronic storage and tracking.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities and supports the Quality and Safety Manager, Medical Directors, and Administrative Director in meeting regulatory and accreditation standards.  Participates in laboratory quality activities including quality monitoring and auditing, occurrence/deviation documentation and performance improvement. Documents deviations in RL solutions.
  • Conducts team huddles and provides in-service as needed.
  • Completes annual competency audit and ensures all staff have required competencies per CAP, AABB, and Joint Commission.
  • Rounds with unit customers, clinicians and Pathologists.
  • Works with section medical directors to provide testing to meet the clinical needs of the patient.
  • Presents required data to the hospital transfusion committee.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:  Bachelor’s Degree AND appropriate ASCP certification.

Experience:  Five years experience with progressive responsibility in a blood bank required. Must include at least two years supervisory experience.

License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required:  National certification ASCP or AMT (or equivalent) required.  SBB preferred.

  • Ability to work with minimum supervision and demonstrate attention to detail.
  • Advanced knowledge of current laboratory practices, techniques, and terminology.
  • Must have strong verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to organize and evaluate work requirements to meet deadlines. 
  • Must be able compile and analyze data for operational monitoring and contractual agreements and review.
