A Brief Overview
The Healthcare Assistant - Student works at the direction of the RN or allied health staff to assist in nonlicensed patient care. The position is an opportunity to explore careers in healthcare. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.

What you will do
  • Recognizes and reacts appropriately to safety related to patient’s care
  • Assists nursing and allied health staff with department appropriate functions
  • Assists with maintaing the overall cleanliness of the department to include sanitizing equipment
  • Performs 1:1 care companion observation according to MLH protocol

Education/Formal Training Requirements
  • Required - High School Diploma or Equivalent

Work Experience Requirements
  • Preferred - Healthcare environment
  • Preferred - No prior work experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to read, write and understand verbal or written instructions.
  • Demonstrates compassion and patience with a deep level of concern for patients.
  • Ability to foster and maintain good working relationships with co-workers, patients and families.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times according to hospital policy and procedures and HIPAA requirements.
  • Able to communicate verbally with others
  • Ability to work with age specific populations including pediatrics, adolescents, adult and geriatric patients

Supervision Provided by this Position
  • There are no supervisory responsibilities for this position.

Physical Demands
  • The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
  • Must have good balance and coordination.
  • The physical requirements of this position are: medium work - exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
  • The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
  • Frequent non-invasive patient contact.
  • Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
  • Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
  • Exposure to high levels of noise.
