Day in the life of an Industrial Placement student

Currently studying an Undergraduate Degree in Biomedical Sciences, Life-Sciences, Digital and Technology, Marketing, Pharmacy or related
Please read the degree requirements for each role carefully before applying.
Other requirements: You will have completed a minimum of 2 years of your undergraduate degree but will not have graduated at the start of your placement. You must be enrolled at a UK (United Kingdom) or ROI (Republic of Ireland) University for the duration of your placement.
If you have already graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree and are currently studying a postgraduate Masters, you are not eligible for this programme.
Language requirement: Written and spoken fluency in English
Expected Start date: June 2025
Duration: 1 year (approximately)
Salary: A salary of £27,100 (GSK HQ) or £25,400 (all other locations) plus a bonus.

Role 1 – ViiV Medical Operations
Roles available: GSK HQ
Degree requirements: Biomedical Sciences or related
Overview of the Department
This role is an opportunity to join a function that stretches across all business functions, whether global, regional or local. During your placement with Medical Operations, you will have end-to-end ownership of assigned project deliverables such as the Virology Education Conference sponsorship programme, during which you will be working to map out the annual programme including publication overview, allocation of attendance, managing sponsorship benefits with regional/local leads globally (conferences can occur in any global location). This team is highly accountable, high functioning and delivers high profile projects under pressure.
Key Placement Activities
Participating in and assisting in running cross-functional strategic planning sessions
Multi-functional stakeholder management – engaging across the business on high profile projects
Stakeholder workstream management – attending workstream meetings and reporting back to the broader project led team to ensure overall alignment to objectives
Close working with the respective congress operations managers in order to support regional congress operating groups and ensure alignment to global strategy and tactical implementation
Evaluating how to best implement global strategy from both a medical and commercial perspective
Delivering materials within the scope of local regulations
Role 2 – ViiV Medical Digital Coordinator

Overview of the Department
We want a world where people who need PrEP or live with HIV and the healthcare professionals who care for them can access the latest medical science, data, and technology. Our mission is to use innovative and scalable digital solutions to improve Medical Affairs and help people living with HIV, people who would benefit from PrEP, and Healthcare Professionals (HCPs). Our strategy is to make digital and AI part of our Medical DNA by leading a digital transformation that will meet the needs of the Medical teams, the HCPs, and ultimately the PLHIV/PWBP, and be powered by the latest technology.
Key Placement Activities
Partner with the Medical Digital leads to deliver the digital, data, analytics and AI projects on time and within budget.
Support the Global Medical Digital team in testing and optimising innovative and transformational digital and AI solutions that could address or even anticipate the needs of patients and HCPs.
Support the Head of Global Medical Digital with internal and external comms, including social media activities and any other emerging channel.
Monitor and evaluate the external digital landscape to support a long-term vision for Digital in Global Medical.
Coordinate the deployment of the global CX and Omnichannel medical framework
Lead the content creation for the CX framework and VX Medical Portal
Role 3 – ViiV Global Medical Affairs
Roles available: GSK HQ
Degree requirements: Biomedical Sciences
Overview of the Department
Join a dynamic and fast paced medical affairs with a strong interface with the research and development team. Gain scientific expertise through interpreting and demonstrating the results of late-stage clinical trials and real-world data sets, as well as providing medical input for regulatory updates. This department supports drug safety teams in pharmacovigilance activities and provides medical expertise and guidance to commercial teams, feeding into the wider research and development strategy by monitoring competitor activity and seeking advice from Healthcare Professionals for regulatory updates.
Key Placement Activities
Expand scientific knowledge base, conduct product related literature searches, and support the medical team to produce new materials used to train medical teams
Cross functional exposure and work across the medical, commercial, and finance teams
Develop valuable project management skills by working with other IP students and medical leads to facilitate internal meetings, briefing creative agencies and leading on internal newsletters.
Gain industry experience & medical expertise in the field of HIV
Build skins in research methodology and critical thinking
Role 4 – ViiV Medical Excellence
Roles available: GSK HQ
Degree requirements: Science or related
Overview of the Department
This role is an opportunity to support the development and execution of the Medical Excellence plan to support the needs of the countries across the international region. Within this team, you will coordinate and manage training programs (both conference and key trainings) for international medical teams.
Key Placement Activities
Managing the International Medical Excellence Academy website, including adding new users, uploading modules, monitoring and tracking usage and producing reports.
Updating the International Medical Sharepoint
Supporting the delivery of the international head office medical excellence plan
Supporting and leading (where appropriate) development and implantation of training programs across the region
Organising and project managing the conference training for commercial and medical teams working with the Medical Excellence Director
Organizing network calls to build the medical leaders’ community and share updates to help best practice sharing.

Role 5 – ViiV European Medical Affairs
Roles available: GSK HQ

Overview of the Department
This placement will enable you to work in the European Medical teams in a fast-paced and dynamic environment and support a department responsible for a wide range of activities. You will develop industry experience & medical expertise in the field of HIV, research methodology and critical thinking, and experience with medical support for commercial deliverables. The European Medical Affairs Team covers a broad range of activities from strategy to execution, across the whole portfolio of ViiV products, Patient Affairs, Medical Education and training. It works in partnership with the ViiV medical teams in each European country, in very close collaboration with the marketing and market access teams and ensures close relationships with Key External Experts on the field of HIV.
Key Placement Activities
Support the European Medical Affairs team to provide training and materials and deliver activities such as advisory board, congress symposiums and workshops.
Participating in and assisting in running cross-functional strategic planning sessions.
Multi-functional stakeholder management – engaging across the business on high profile projects.

Role 6 – Vaccines Medical Assistant

Overview of the Department
The Vaccines department is responsible for operational planning, involving a variety of activities such as publications, commercial support and working with the GMA team to ensure success. Within this role, you will provide support to both the wider team and Healthcare Professionals, writing reports and providing recommendations to optimise strategies and achieve maximum impact across the region. The department also provides congressional support and works with agencies to both support the proactive planning for upcoming congresses and ensure the best outcome of agency relationships.
Key Placement Activities
Develop engaging medical materials to be used across different channels, working with agencies and managing timelines.
Facilitate internal meetings by scheduling, providing minutes, following up and knowledge sharing.
Work with the cross-functional congress delivery team to identify creative engagement tools that are endorsed by key Local Operating Countries to successfully reach target audiences.
Participate in After Action Reviews and assist the congress lead to gather feedback, analyse and measure success vs KPIs.
Assist the team to maintain an engaging plan throughout the year across various channels, including digital, social media, and traditional platforms.
Role 7 – ViiV Paediatric Medical Affairs
Roles available: GSK HQ

Overview of the Department
This role is an opportunity to join the Global Paediatrics Medical Affairs team, which supports the overall mission of paediatrics across the portfolio, working closely with R+D, medical affairs, global commercial, scientific communications, and health outcomes group. ViiV has the aspiration to make HIV infections and AIDS rare events for children and adolescents and make HIV a smaller part of the daily lives of children, adolescents, and their caregivers. The successful candidate will gain experience of planning and delivering of paediatric medical affairs initiatives and activities for internal stakeholders (working with medical, research and development, sales, marketing, local operating companies) and external (health care professionals, advocacy and people living with HIV and their communities) customers.
Key Placement Activities
Engaging in targeted literature reviews to enhance knowledge and identify key data gaps in paediatrics, while gaining a comprehensive understanding of the scientific process for generating evidence-based data.
Owning the end-to-end management of specific paediatric projects, tailored to specific interests and needs (examples include generation of African paediatric cohort tracker).
Assisting in the planning and development of global advisory boards, including managing external experts and collaborating with regional/local leads globally.
Actively participating in and contributing to cross-functional strategic planning sessions, fostering a solid comprehension of the role of Medical Affairs within the industry and cultivating project management skills.
Providing support in implementing the medical education strategy for paediatrics, ensuring effective delivery of educational initiatives.
Serving as a liaison with external agencies, facilitating effective communication and collaboration.
Role 8 – Global Congressing – Data Generation and Scientific Communications

Overview of the Department
Our organisation, Chief Patient Officer, is the third pillar of GSK, alongside Commercial and R&D. The Global Congress team works with partners across the business to deliver priority congresses for GSK. The global congress team is responsible for ensuring impactful, innovative delivery of scientific communications that drives understanding of GSK's science and evidence at congress. The team supports all 4 pharma therapy areas, and partners with cross-functional stakeholders in global, regional and LOC level in the strategic planning. Data Gen and Sci Comms department also includes other teams, including evidence generation, medical information, and content creation.

Planning & delivery of medical affairs presence for priority global congresses across all GSKs therapy areas

Role 9 – ViiV Medical Europe
Roles available: GSK HQ
Degree requirements: Biomedical Sciences, Life Sciences, Chemistry
Overview of the Department
The ViiV Medical Europe team plan, develop and execute all Medical and Patient Affairs operations for the UK. Operations include, but are not limited to, the development of medical materials for health care professionals, running of national meetings, attendance at national and international conferences, coordination of ViiV clinical trials being run in the UK, disease awareness campaigns, and community partnerships. This role is incredibly varied and offers you the opportunity to develop your skills in medical strategy planning, project development and content creation, as well as exposing you to aspects of clinical trial planning such as site selection.
Key Placement Activities
Execute Medical Affairs strategy and tactics.
Develop medical materials to be utilised at national congress and meetings.
Plan, develop and execute innovative new strategies to engage with the HIV healthcare community, for example, national meetings, community advocacy initiatives including leading on their own project.
Contribute to the development of impactful medical materials for health care professionals e.g. slide decks, videos, infographics.
Contribute to Patient Affairs operations.
