SUMMARY
A proficient and detail-oriented Network Technician responsible for supporting the design, implementation, and maintenance of complex enterprise network systems. This role ensures the reliability, performance, and security of LAN, WAN, and wireless infrastructures through advanced troubleshooting, proactive monitoring, and hands-on configuration of network devices. The technician assists in deploying new technologies, performing upgrades, and optimizing connectivity across multiple sites. In addition to day-to-day operations, this position contributes to infrastructure improvement projects, collaborates closely with network engineers and security teams, and provides technical insights that enhance network efficiency and resiliency across the organization.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Install, configure, and support network hardware, cabling, and connectivity devices including switches, access points, and patch panels across enterprise environments
Perform routine network maintenance, testing, and performance verification to ensure system reliability and uptime
Troubleshoot connectivity issues, LAN/WAN performance problems, and hardware malfunctions to quickly restore service and minimize business impact
Assist in implementing network configurations and upgrades under the direction of senior engineers or network architects
Maintain and repair network hardware, cabling infrastructure, and related peripheral equipment
Monitor network operations using enterprise tools, escalating performance or connectivity concerns to engineering teams when needed
Collaborate closely with operations, systems, and cybersecurity teams to ensure network stability, security, and alignment with service delivery goals
Support scheduled upgrades, maintenance windows, and firmware updates while minimizing disruption to business activities
Document network changes, cable maps, and equipment inventories for accurate tracking and future planning
Provide technical support and guidance to end users and team members regarding network connectivity and system usage
Coordinate with external vendors and service providers for equipment procurement, repair, and service delivery
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience:
High school graduate or equivalent and three (3) years relevant experience.

At least two years of relevant college-level course work or an associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field and two (2) of progressive experience.
or
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Information Technology, Computer Science, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the essential job duties.
Knowledge and Skills:
Proven experience in network engineering or a similar role.
Strong knowledge of MS VISIO, TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPNs, VLANs, VXLAN, NXOS, ACI and network security practices.
Experience with enterprise network hardware from vendors such as Aruba, Cisco, Juniper, Cradlepoint or equivalent.
Familiarity with network monitoring tools and systems (e.g., SolarWinds, PRTG, Nagios).
Familiarity with network security and policy enforcement platforms that act as gatekeepers for wired, wireless, and VPN access (e.g., ISE, ClearPass)
Relevant certifications (e.g., CCNA, CompTIA Network+) preferred.
Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
Excellent communication and documentation abilities.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
The position requires a blend of sedentary desk work and active physical tasks, including occasional lifting of equipment up to 40 pounds, bending, or accessing network areas such as data closets and wiring spaces. The role demands strong focus, problem-solving, and analytical abilities to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues under pressure. Attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to manage multiple priorities are essential. The incumbent must also remain adaptable to evolving technologies and be available for after-hours support as part of the on-call rotation.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
This position may require occasional evening or weekend work to perform maintenance, upgrades, or resolve outages. On-call availability may be required depending on operational needs.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.
