Reviews, supervises, and evaluates activities and performance of Communications Specialists engaged in University Police and other law enforcement communication operations. Responsible for implementing section and departmental goals and policies into practical operation Establishes, monitors, and maintains manpower schedules and initiates/implements changes to these as required in order to maintain efficiency and protection of people and property on a 24 hour basis.
Operates radio console consisting of numerous frequencies / talkgroups both with campus and area public safety agencies. Operates telephone system with 911, Direct line, and regular lines. Operates National and local computer systems in addition to department CAD system. Operates and monitors 2 fire alarm and detection systems, and 2 card access control systems. Redirects telephone and radio calls or dispatches officers via radio system for both emergency and non emergency situations.
Maintains 24-hour telephone/radio recording system. Monitors closed circuit TVs, 2 Burglary / Intrusion alarm system controllers. Activities observed or detected on these systems could require dispatcher to radio / send an officer to location. Dispatchers also handle walk-in questions, complaints, etc frequently serving as the first contact from the Police department.
Transmits information over the radio net and receives or conveys information over the telephone in a professional and courteous manner. Answers calls within a reasonable timeframe in accordance with departmental policies. Keeps radio traffic brief.
Seeks and participates in training opportunities to improve or enhance performance. Maintains any required certifications. Submits training suggestions/requests to their supervisor for approval. Attends all assigned training. Conducts training including initial or remedial training of employees as needed.
The Communications Center is an area that falls under the auspices of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation Audit Unit which deals with the maintenance of Criminal History Record Information. Ensure that employees comply with all provisions of unit in maintaining appropriate dissemination logs.
Maintains department issued equipment. Report damaged or faulty equipment to their supervisor as soon as possible; and prior to the end of their shift. Performs other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
Education: High school diploma. Two years experience in a Communications related field. Free of any felony convictions.
Work Experience
Hearing must be correctable in a range that will allow normal radio and telephone conversation.
Vision must be correctable to a range that will allow reading and/or viewing of computer display terminals, maps, printouts and CCTV quickly and accurately. Meet Civil Service requirements for this position.
Successfully complete testing for National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification within six months of employment. Successful recertification is required every two years.
Must submit to and successfully complete a background investigation and psychological examination.

Compensation Statement:
The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
