If you are a planetary gear expert with a passion for seeing your parts on high impact products, we need your help developing the most exciting electric humanoid robot in the world as we transition from R&D to production. As a Senior Staff Mechanical Engineer on the Atlas Actuation team, you will leverage your creativity and knowledge on all aspects of planetary gearbox design to make impactful decisions from concept design to production. Additionally, as a senior member of the team, you will be an integral part of expanding production focused best practices and expertise.

You will be responsible for designing, analyzing, DFM’ing, and working with internal and external partners to produce planetary gearboxes. Your expertise will play a crucial role in ensuring reliability and adding value to our products. Navigating ambiguity, creative thinking, attention to detail, technical excellence, efficient communication, and a team first collaborative mindset are key superpowers that will lead to success.

How you will make an impact:

  • Develop planetary gear systems for the Atlas platform, considering factors such as operational load spectra, overload events, efficiency, packaging constraints, weight, manufacturability, and cost

  • Optimize gear designs for mass production. Evaluate and trade a wide variety of materials, fabrication processes, surface treatments, and finishing operations

  • Reason through abstract, novel considerations and constraints specific to the emerging humanoid robot industry

  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineers and contribute to knowledge sharing within the team

Required Experience:

  • In-depth knowledge of gear theory, including gear macro/micro geometry, fatigue, backlash, and manufacturing considerations

  • Strong understanding of production friendly gear manufacturing processes and materials

  • Strong proficiency in gear design, analysis, and simulation tools (e.g., KISSsoft, MASTA)

  • Ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams and excellent communication skills to articulate complex technical concepts effectively

  • Empathetic communicator and mindset of always learning

Desired Experience:

  • BSME and 10+ years of relevant experience, MSME or PhD with 6+ years of experience. Ideally within the robotics industry

  • Experience with plastic gear manufacturing

  • Comfortable working in matlab, processing time series and histograms. Comfortable working with and automating large sets of data

  • Familiarity with other robotics transmissions such as strain wave and cycloidal, and an understanding of the trade space versus planetary. Familiarity with alternative planetary transmissions such as compound and differential drivetrains
