About the Team

Our Technology team drives the evolution of our Technology, Engineering, Data, Product and User Experience functions. With a keen focus on delivering cutting-edge solutions, we shape the digital landscape for our customers, readers and users. From revolutionizing visuals to optimizing tools and harnessing the power of data, mobile, video and social platforms, our team is committed to providing a seamless and immersive experience across all touchpoints. Collaborating closely with our newsrooms and strategic partners, we spearhead the development of groundbreaking products and technologies.

About Dow Jones Design

Excellence in news and information services demands excellence in our customers’ experiences. Our Design & Research Team brings together teams covering Product, Engineering, Marketing, and Operations with a single purpose: to connect people to the news and information that matters most. We deliver information when and where our users need it by defining and building connected, innovative products that are data informed and with a customer lens. We’re a globally distributed team spearheading a digital transformation at Dow Jones newly staffed by industry leaders from Google, LinkedIn, The New York Times, and more.

About the Role:

We’re looking for a Vice President of Product Design to lead our Barcelona office’s Product Design team. This tight-knit team executes Product Design strategies for significant parts of the Dow Jones core product portfolio across our B2B and B2C brands like The Wall Street Journal and Factiva. This is a pivotal role on our team and whoever takes this on will be a key member of our Design & Research Leadership team.

This role will be responsible for setting the tone and fostering a collaborative, open culture for our design team in our Barcelona office aligned with our Design Leadership in NYC. You’ll be at the forefront of our work to build our Design team into a strategic force that empowers our user base while taking Dow Jones’ businesses to new heights.

In this capacity, you’re a proven and inspirational Creative Leader who raises the bar for design xOrg while lifting up the designers on your team. You're an empathetic and pragmatic person with a flair for strategic influence across product, technology, marketing, and editorial stakeholders. Finally, you have a superpower that guides these stakeholders towards alignment across our respective timezones.

The Vice President of Product Design will report to the SVP of Design & Research at Dow Jones.

You Will:

  • Lead by example. We’re on a mission to elevate design across our entire business. You must be a role model for the design team. This means bringing to bear your advanced experience and being passionate about design in all forms (digital, industrial, fashion, etc.) and attuned to the zeitgeist while always willing to learn and grow.
  • Set and own a vision and strategy for Product Design within the Barcelona office that’s aligned to our Global standards aligned with the company's overall business strategies. Assist in clearly communicating + evangelize our goals to other executive leadership across the globe.
  • Oversee design and implement design processes for all products and services across your portfolio. Our products are designed to be user-friendly, effective, and visually appealing–regardless of B2B or B2C—the standards for coherence and quality are high no matter what.
  • Commit yourself to advocate for investment in the growth and development of designers. The VP of Product Design should be committed to the growth and development of their team and establish ways to do this both internally and externally.
  • Be a natural connector, collaborator, and instigator. You’ll do this by forming meaningful and lasting connections with our Editorial, Technology, Product Management, and Marketing teams. We’ll push strategy together, but we’ll also be instigators to challenge the status quo to push our products forward in new ways.
  • Understand the complex needs of marketing and brand differentiation across our brands and drive for consistency across platforms—while knowing when to intelligently deviate. You’ll advocate for bringing these brand stakeholders together into our design tent.
  • Stay up-to-date on the latest design trends and technologies. You’ll share your knowledge of—and perhaps be an industry expert in—the latest trends in the media, information, and knowledge management space. You’ll  contribute to our internal understanding of our rapidly evolving business environment.
  • Last but never least, serve as an advocate for our users—whether they’re reading and interacting with our publications or using our data and research tools. You’ll keep their needs at the heart of our customer experience.

You Have:

  • 15+ years of or equivalent experience working on a product design team contributing to the product design direction of a consumer or B2B business (preferably both)
  • Experience establishing broad strategies for a design organization, including managing managers and influencing + upleveling senior independent contributors.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Experience executing design on subscription-based and/or ad supported products.
  • A strong portfolio that demonstrates successful products you’ve been a part of building. And thoughtful analysis of the ones you’ve been a part of that haven’t worked out!
  • Ability to lead and take initiative, balancing strategic goals with daily tactical opportunities, and deploy and manage resourcing accordingly with a steady hand.
  • Expertise working on mobile, web-based and responsive design and a strong grasp of UI, HCI, Accessibility and UX principles.
  • Expertise with component based design, Design Systems, Figma, and other design tools (ProtoPie, etc.)
  • Strong proficiency with G-suite products and experience with professional collaboration tools such as Jira, Miro, Confluence and Airtable.
  • Comfortable in a hybrid working environment and know how to influence from a distance.
