What You Will Do:

We are currently searching for Physician Assistant to perform patient care and scientific research services in support of research conducted from the Office of the Clinical Director (OCD) within the Division of Intramural Research (DIR), at the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI). This is a full-time, on-site opportunity in Bethesda, MD.   Support clinical research initiatives by possessing knowledge of the biomedical research process, support of patients on biomedical research protocols and awareness of ethical issues.  This knowledge can be demonstrated via the following tasks:

  • Identifies and communicates the impact of the research process on patient care, adjusts interventions based on findings and reports issues/variance promptly to the research team.    
  • When appropriate or requested, administers research interventions, collects patient data according to protocol specifications and evaluates patient’s response to therapy; responds to variances in protocol implementation and reports them to the research team.          
  • Manages ethical conflicts / issues that may arise in a clinical research setting. 
  • Obtains informed consent, completes research documentation, and participates in scheduling for clinical trial participants.  
  • Participates in protocol amendments, protocol monitoring visits, and serves as point of contact for protocol navigators.  
  • Serves as consultant to physicians, nurses, and community-based health care personnel, communicating current data resulting from clinical trials and the management of designated patients. 
  • Recommends approaches and solutions to problems that may arise. 
  • Integrates evidence-based practice into nursing practice and evaluates patient outcomes. 
  • Demonstrates decisions and actions that support organizational change, NHLBI DIR, OCD mission, vision, department goals, and leadership structure. 
  • Provides leadership to professional communities, the nursing profession and health care agencies to establish and upgrade standards, develop policy, and interpret the significance of research findings to applied clinical settings. 
  • Seeks new knowledge and skills based on self-assessment, feedback from peers and supervisors, and changing clinical practice requirements 
  • Contributes to the identification of learning needs for the practice environment and provides learning opportunities for others. 
  • Performs medical management of patients by incorporating critical thinking skills with advanced clinical practice and research skills and integrating experiential knowledge and evidence-based practiceCollaborates with the interdisciplinary team, patients, and families to enhance clinical practice and careFacilitates learning for patients and families Some of the key duties are outlined below:
  • Manages patient care that is delivered in accordance with policies, procedures, and standards of practice for Physician Assistants within the Maryland Board of Physicians and the Medical Board of the Clinical Center of NIH. 
  • Provides care to acute and /or complex patient populations in the inpatient and outpatient settings. 
  • Identifies and communicates patterns and trends that may predict the direction of illness and provides nursing care to prevent adverse outcomes. 
  • Completes medical records (admissions, discharges, progress notes, consult reports) in a timely and effective manner. 
  • Communicates verbally and in the medical record of patient management recommendations of the attending physician. 
  • Efficiently orchestrates daily routines in clinical practice. 
  • Communicates with patients and their family members in a manner that is perceived to be therapeutic, timely and accurate. 


What You Will Need:

  • Master’s Degree in an accredited Physician Assistant Program with ONE (1) year of clinical experience and an active Physician Assistant License, in lieu of experience
  • Current and active Maryland Physician Assistant License required
  • Contingency, NIH CC credentialing needs to be completed within first 60-90 days after the start date.
