This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable.

We are seeking a Lead Senior Structural Design Engineer to join our team working on our New Glenn Second Stage Tanks projects. In this role, you will be responsible for leading a lean engineering initiative aimed at advancing new space capabilities. You will oversee a specialized team of engineers from various disciplines to accelerate the design and development process, while building upon the existing New Glenn Stage 2 design and introducing innovative new features. This is a unique opportunity to play a key role in shaping the future of space development.

This is a highly collaborative and engaging role where you will have the opportunity to lead the entire design process, from concept to delivery. You will also have the chance to contribute to program management, ensuring that cost, schedule, and technical design are aligned with our goals. This role will require close collaboration, providing a chance to develop and maintain valuable relationships. Responsibilities:

  • Drive the structural design and configuration of propellant tanks, internal structures, and interfaces.
  • Perform detailed design, analysis, development, and testing of primary and secondary structures directly exposed to cryogenic liquids.
  • Generate 3D models, detailed part drawings, assemblies, installations, and interface control documents to both internal and customer specifications
  • Work across business units and functional organizations within Blue Origin to meet the project deliverables. This individual will act as a liaison between various internal/external business partners and process owners, executing effective supplier management and coordination with the supply chain teams.  This includes planning, critical supplier actions, negotiations, and recurring cost reduction initiatives.
  • Develop project summary presentations and memos for executive review, internal team meetings and support to the Blue Origin communications team. 
  • Maintain and routinely report performance to plan on schedule, resources, cost, and technical performance metrics. 
  • Participate in subsystem test planning, execution, data reduction and analysis
  • Coach, mentor and technically assist junior engineers; Provide technical mentorship for integration
  • Provide on-site manufacturing and production support, including travel when needed.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a B.S. in an aerospace, mechanical, or systems engineering-related field, with 8+ years of related experience. 
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
  • Program and technical leadership experience in an aerospace development environment with experience in full lifecycle development of aerospace systems, designing, deploying, and supporting one or more complete flight systems.
  • Highly organized leader with excellent technical written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated track record of resourcefulness, strong business and technical judgement and bias for action from their previous assignments.
  • Comfortable working in a fast paced, dynamic work environment and ability to travel in support of the program, customer, and supplier activities.
  • Ability to work with complex, minimally defined requirements and organizations while earning trust, maintaining positive and professional relationships, and contributing to a culture of inclusion
  • Experience on launch vehicles, aircraft or similar in one or more of the following areas:
    • Design of minimal-mass structure, especially pressurized structures
    • Design of interfaces to fluid systems such as baffles, anti-vortex devices, or cryogenic seals
    • Material development and structural testing
    • Structural design of metallic components and assemblies
    • Vehicle load path distribution, and first order strength assessment and sizing
  • Knowledge of material selection, compatibility, and manufacturing techniques
  • Strong understanding of structural design and analysis principles
  • Strong mechanical design skills using Creo and CATIA V5.
  • Ability to conduct structural analysis using classical hand-calculation and finite element techniques
  • Experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance analysis (ASME Y14.5)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong communication skills, with an ability to quickly build consensus among stakeholders
  • Experience with rapid development techniques for hardware
  • Experience with welding and forming processes
  • Demonstrated expertise with any industry standard analysis codes: Ansys, Nastran, Optistruct, LS Dyna, Hypermesh, Hypersizer
  • Demonstrated experience developing manufacturing processes for production
  • Knowledge of systems engineering practices, fabrication and integration processes, and quality control
  • Experience with Optimization and DOE methods as applied to design, analysis, and testing
  • Experience working in a multi-functional team responsible for selecting materials, manufacturing processes, and developing the design to produce world-class engineered products


 

Compensation Range for:

WA applicants is $136,467.00-$191,053.80

Other site ranges may differ
