Principal Platform Engineer - Flutter UK&I, Hybrid

The UKI Infrastructure and Platform team provide core services to our product and technology teams to enable them to have delivery and execution independence.   As a Principal Platform Engineer in the Flutter UKI Infrastructure and Platform team, your role is crucial in guiding and supporting the department, alongside critical input into the maintenance and evolution of the organization's technology infrastructure to enhance our consumers enablement.
Responsibilities include platform design, development and maintenance, system monitoring and optimization, capacity planning, infrastructure automation, security and compliance, incident management and support.  Alongside these, the role requires technical leadership & direction, mentoring, collaboration and influence with key teams outside of the Infrastructure squads.  The team functions as a 24/7 operational support unit with on-call availability.

Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities 

Demonstrates outstanding knowledge of Infrastructure & Platforms systems: Applies comprehensive understanding of group engineering systems management as key responsibility involves designing, implementing, and maintaining the Flutter UKI platform infrastructure. This includes both the development of new platforms and the enhancement of existing ones to meet evolving business needs.
Driving Improvements: Proactively drive and contribute to opportunities to improve processes, adopt new technologies, and enhance the reliability, performance, and security of the platform, as well as drive the cloud cost management plans. 
Automation Contributor: Demonstrate a proactive approach in identifying potential areas for automation, collaborates with management to priorities these opportunities, and spearheads the implementation of automated solutions, adhering to an "Automation First" principle.  You are driving the self-service principle across the business. 
Ownership :  Exhibit ownership of squad deliverables and KPIs/SLAs, demonstrating a sense of responsibility and accountability. Lead and take charge of a work stream or incident.
Mentorship: Act as a mentor to other members in the squad, actively sharing knowledge and teaching skills.
Role Modelling: Serve as a role model both behaviorally and in terms of capabilities, inspiring Associate/Graduate Engineers through their actions.
Squad Technical Direction and innovation: Demonstrates proactiveness by taking responsibility of guiding the technical direction of the squad, providing clarity and vision 
Tribe Awareness and Contribution: Demonstrates a proactive awareness, understanding and actively contributes to the broader infrastructure and platforms strategy, roadmap and resolving challenges. 
Engineering Practices Consultation: Actively participate in the review and enhancement of engineering practices and operational methods within squads, actively contributing to the ongoing process of continuous improvement.
Strategic Roadmap Definition: Demonstrates ownership of the strategic roadmap, outlining key technological directions for the team or project. Promotes efforts on project-based work, including in-squad operational initiatives.
Stakeholder Management: Exhibit comfort in engaging with non-technical stakeholders, showcasing effective communication and high-level engagement.
Collaboration: Demonstrating effective collaboration through active communication, building relationships and influencing. Acting as a consultant for other teams, providing expertise on complex technical decisions whilst respectfully challenging decisions and direction from Leadership

Skills, Capabilities & Experience Required 

Subject Matter Expert (SME) level knowledge of Platform Engineering Principals
Subject Matter Expert (SME) level knowledge of using the supported products in a production environment 
  • CDK
  • Kubernetes/Docker 
  • Networking
  • AWS
  • Git
  • Jenkins (or similar CI system)
  • Configuration Management (Chef, Ansible)
  • General Linux operations.
  • Infrastructure Specific Products (Virtualization, Storage technologies, Hardware appliances)
Proven track record for evaluating and embracing new technologies and tooling. 
Vast experience with managing high-load, high-performance, high-availability applications.
Strong AWS experience supporting cloud native infrastructure through tooling and automation. 
Able to drive the ways of working and structure of the squad
Developing engineers both behaviorally and in terms of capability
Delegating tasks and serve as a reliable deputy when required
Identify and fill skills gaps.
