Job Summary

NORTHWESTERN MUTUAL INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT COMPANY, LLC, located in Milwaukee, WI, is a registered investment adviser and wholly owned subsidiary of the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company (NM) with over $250 billion in assets under management. Northwestern Mutual’s spread lending business is managed within NMIMC’s Investment Strategy Department (ISD). The business has grown to over $11 billion since establishment in 2020. Spread lending generates investment income through financing the purchase of well-matched investment grade fixed income assets across multiple financing sources. The Analyst will join and support ISD’s spread lending team.

What you will do:

This role will be a member of ISD’s spread lending team, responsible for maintaining tools and reports and executing operations under supervision. The Analyst will develop an understanding of spread lending business objectives and Northwestern Mutual’s investment and risk management processes.

Primary Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

  • Maintain and update spread lending tools, reports, and trackers as related to assets, liabilities, profitability, financing sources/costs, and funding agreement-backed markets.
  • Support data and processes aiding team development of dynamic spread lending dashboards.
  • Support new business pricing tools, inforce asset-liability projection models, and analysis.
  • Support daily monitoring and operations, including cash monitoring and commercial paper trade ticket submission. Support prospective asset-liability maturity management.
  • Develops an understanding of the spread lending business objectives and operations.
  • Develops an understanding of fixed income asset classes, financing sources, and asset-liability risk management.
  • Develops an understanding of statutory accounting, economic capital, and Northwestern Mutual’s approach to investment and risk management.
  • Maintain strong working relationships within the spread lending team and across the department/function/enterprise.
  • Progress towards professional investment or actuarial certification (CFA/ASA).

Relevant Technical Skills:

  • MS Office/Excel
  • Bloomberg, Aladdin
  • SQL, Power BI, Snowflake
  • PYTHON, R, or other advanced data analytics skills
  • Actuarial or ALM Modeling Software (MG-ALFA, Prophet, GGY Axis, etc.)

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, actuarial science, economics, accounting, computer science/engineering or related field or equivalent work experience.
  • General understanding of interest rates, fixed income assets, and derivatives.
  • General understanding of ALM and risk metrics.
  • Proficiency in Excel.
  • Familiarity in SQL and/or data querying. Familiarity with Power BI or related.
  • Strong work ethic and communication skills. Advanced problem solving skills.
  • Intellectual curiosity in investments and financial markets.
  • Thinks with an enterprise mindset.

Northwestern Mutual pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement in the salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment.
