The Pharmacy Technician – Inpatient supports medication management and distribution within a collaborative hospital pharmacy team of approximately 40 caregivers, including pharmacists, technicians, and interns, with about five caregivers per shift. Responsibilities include Pyxis management, medication refilling and delivery throughout the hospital, inventory control, and sterile and non-sterile compounding (with limited hazardous compounding). This role works closely with clinical teams to ensure safe, timely, and efficient medication access in an inpatient setting.

A Caregiver in this position will rotate through five shifts Monday through Friday and work every third weekend and every other holiday. The majority of shifts are morning-based. Weekday Shifts are 6:00am – 2:30pm, 6:30am – 3:00pm, 8:00am – 4:30pm, 12:00pm – 8:30pm or 1:30pm – 10:00pm. Weekend Shifts (Saturday & Sunday – same shift both days) occur 6:00am – 2:30pm, 6:30am – 3:00pm, 8:00am – 4:30pm or 1:30pm – 10:00pm.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Prepare medications through selecting, labeling, repacking, non-sterile compounding and sterile compounding.  
  • Deliver medications to the appropriate storage locations in an accurate and timely manner. 
  • Maintain accurate and appropriate inventories of medications and supplies and complete inventory audits, such as cycle counts and nursing unit inspections.  
  • Maintain a safe and clean work area by complying with procedures, rules and regulations, and document regulatory requirements such as temperature logs, scheduled activities and training.  
  • Use information systems, technology and automation to complete assigned tasks.  
  • Assist with the training of pharmacy caregivers and students. 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:   

  • High School Diploma/GED   
  • Six months of related experience OR completion of a Pharmacy Technician Program   
  • Understanding of algebraic calculations necessary for the preparation of extemporaneous compounds    

Must meet all of the following license and certification combination requirements at the time of application:

  • Must hold an active registration as a Registered Pharmacy Technician through the Ohio Board of Pharmacy (OBOP).

  • It is required, within 18 months from the date of hire: Must obtain a national certification as a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcare Association (NHA)  AND Registration as a Certified Pharmacy Technician with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:    

  • Six months of hospital experience   

Physical Requirements:

  • Typical physical demands include ability to perform the job while standing, walking, reaching, stretching and sitting for prolonged periods; manual dexterity sufficient to perform computer, dispensing, and compounding.

Personal Protective Equipment:

•     Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
