Summary :

The Hospital Unit Clerk performs admitting and scheduling duties for patients in the emergency department, outpatient services, and inpatient services. Performs functions while meeting the mission and goals of ThedaCare and all regulatory compliance requirements. Works within the policies and processes as they are being performed across ThedaCare. Through collaborative practice with all members of the care team, is responsible for patient outcomes that meet the high quality of care provided by ThedaCare. Contributes to the goals of the department by being accountable for the delivery of compassionate, safe care and demonstrated commitment to continuous growth and professional development.

ThedaCare Medical Center - Waupaca is a 25 bed critical access hospital and is ranked in the top 100 critical access hospitals in the United States! Services offered on the campus include: inpatient medical/surgical services, intensive care, family birth center, emergency services, surgical services, primary care, multi-specialty clinic, outpatient rehabilitation services, diagnostics and imaging, and laboratory.

Job Description:

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Assigns accurate MRNs, completes medical necessity, and collects insurance information. Operates the telephone switchboard to relay incoming, outgoing, and interoffice calls as applicable. Explains general consent for treatment forms to the patient/guarantor/legal guardian, obtains necessary signatures, and witnesses name. Explains and distributes patient education documents such as Important Message from Medicare, Important Message from Tricare, Observation Forms, MOON form, consent forms, and all forms implemented for future services. Coordinates all patient transfers out of the hospital ensuring all required documentation and medical record information is completed by clinicians and included in transfer packet. Performs delegated patient care activities using evidence-based practice and specific competencies for the patient population served. Assists in meeting the care needs of the patient in collaboration with the care team to ensure quality, cost-effective, safe patient care practices. Demonstrates clinical expertise in the provision of care in the clinical specialty assigned and performs all functions of the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) that are age appropriate, developmentally sensitive, and culturally specific. Respectfully addresses situations or decisions to ensure patient concerns and needs are met. Identifies and escalates patient risk to prevent crises. Demonstrates professional and therapeutic relationships with patients, families, team members, and providers. Performs and documents patient cares including personal hygiene, mobility, activities of daily living, and vital signs, and ensures the care environment promotes patient safety. Provides care to patients including collecting ody fluids for testing and cultures and provides patient care as defined within the nursing plan of care and/or physician orders, within the scope of the CNA role. Provides customer service by responding to frequent and potentially complex questions from internal and external customers in a timely, positive, and professional manner. Assists in supporting daily emergency and medical/surgical department work flow through effective coordination, communication, and prioritization of department activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid State of Wisconsin Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Certification
  • American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to move freely (standing, stooping, walking, bending, pushing, and pulling) and lift up to a maximum of fifty (50) pounds without assistance. Ability to frequently change positions from sitting to standing/walking.
  • Job classification is exposed to blood borne pathogens (blood or bodily fluids) while performing job duties

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Interaction with department members and other healthcare providers
  • Frequent exposure to sharp objects and instruments
  • Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock
  • Occasional high noise level in work environment
  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous materials, and pharmacological agents
  • Occasional contact with aggressive and or combative patients
