Job Description Summary:

The Director of Business Development – Practice Development is a strategic leader focused on elevating the market presence and growth trajectory of the firm’s practice groups. This role works closely with practice leadership to develop and execute business development strategies, with an emphasis on thought leadership content, visibility initiatives, and the creation of productized offerings that resonate with the market. In addition, the role supports high-impact pitches and proposals, develops internal tools to scale outreach, and helps enable cross-functional initiatives that drive firmwide client development and growth.

As co-leader of the firm’s Business Development function, this role works in close partnership with the Director of Business Development – Lifecycle Growth & Market Development to drive the department’s OKRs, aligning internal offerings with external go-to-market strategies. Together, they co-develop strategic initiatives and lead cross-functional teams in a matrixed model—ensuring offerings are well-executed, team performance is supported, and the BD function operates as a cohesive growth engine aligned with Fenwick’s top institutional priorities.

This position can be based in any of our U.S. office locations and offers a hybrid work arrangement, allowing you to work both from home and at your designated Fenwick office. The frequency of in-office work will be determined by business needs and guided by your department's directives.

Job Description:

Cross-Practice Strategic Planning & Offering Development

  • Lead the development of practice-specific products and strategic offerings that enable value-added client growth opportunities.
  • Design integrated, cross-practice materials and resources that showcase Fenwick’s depth in core sectors.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Strategic Growth & Market Development to ensure these offerings are market-ready and tailored to client-facing deployment.
  • Build scalable tools and engagement assets that empower attorney teams and enhance the client development journey.
  • Partner with Competitive Intelligence (CI) teams to identify client expansion opportunities, leveraging data and insights to inform practice-specific growth strategies.

Practice-Specific Strategy

  • Partner with practice leaders to develop and implement growth plans that drive client development.
  • Manage experience lists, client rosters, pitch material, and BD content libraries to support pursuit efforts.
  • Lead the firm’s directory/award submission process and practice-level visibility campaigns.
  • Support attorney participation in relevant conferences, activations, and programs that enhance practice reputation.

Team Leadership & Matrixed Collaboration

  • Co-lead the Business Development function in a matrixed model, driving forward the department’s OKRs, overseeing performance, coaching, and execution across initiatives, practices, and geographies.
  • Provide senior leadership, training and mentorship to BD managers and professionals, instilling a high-performing, strategic, and collaborative culture.
  • Partner with the Associate Director of Operations to track and measure effectiveness of strategies and initiatives.
  • Ensure alignment and coordination across internal and external priorities to avoid silos and maximize ROI.

Reporting to the Chief Marketing & Business Development Officer, the ideal candidate will have a minimum of fifteen (15) years of relevant work experience in a law firm setting. Bachelor’s degree required, JD, MBA or other advanced degrees strongly preferred.

The anticipated range for this position is:

$216,000 - $324,000

Depending on the role, the actual base salary offered may depend upon a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job.

A discretionary bonus for eligible employees may also be available based on performance.  Additional information about employee eligibility for benefits and discretionary bonus will be made available upon request.
