Main Purpose:

As part of the extension of our LNG trading desk, we are looking for an LNG Trader specializing in the Japanese market to develop long-lasting relationships within the Japanese LNG community and generate opportunities in the structured/mid-to-long term space.

The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the LNG industry, excellent analytical skills, and extensive experience in trading, supply chain management, and stakeholder engagement within the commodities trading industry. This role requires the ability to develop and execute trading strategies, manage risk, and build strong relationships with key stakeholders.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, or a related field, ideally from a Japanese University
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the energy sector, with a focus on supply chain management, strategy planning, and book management.
  • Expertise in data analysis and stakeholder engagement within the commodities trading industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate with customers and successfully manage product inventory.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills, with proficiency in using trading and risk management systems.
  • Excellent negotiation and communication skills, with fluency in English and Japanese (TOEIC score of 940).
  • Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Strong understanding of risk management principles and practices.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and make informed decisions under pressure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Trade physical LNG across spot, mid-term, and long-term with a particular focus on the Japanese market.
  • Develop new and broaden/deepen existing relationships with Japanese counterparties.
  • Manage risk (both financial and operational) and extract value through portfolio optimization and new deal origination.
  • Structure, negotiate, and execute complex multi-year deals in a value-creative manner.
  • Analyze market trends, supply-demand dynamics, and pricing structures in the Japanese LNG market.
  • Develop and implement trading strategies to optimize profitability and manage risks.
  • Monitor regulatory changes and geopolitical developments impacting the LNG market.
  • Execute LNG trades, including spot and term contracts, with a focus on the Japanese market.
  • Negotiate and finalize commercial terms and contracts with counterparties.
  • Manage the physical delivery of LNG cargoes, coordinating with the Operations teams.
  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities to expand the company’s presence in the Japanese LNG market.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with potential new clients and partners.
  • Collaborate with the Global Head to create and implement strategies for market expansion.
  • Assess and recommend potential investments, joint ventures, and partnerships that align with the company’s strategic goals.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key market participants, including suppliers, customers, and industry stakeholders.
  • Represent the company at industry conferences, events, and meetings.
  • Provide market intelligence and insights to internal stakeholders.
  • Monitor trading performance and report on PnL, market positions, and trading activities.
  • Conduct post-trade analysis to evaluate strategy effectiveness and identify areas for improvement.
  • Prepare regular reports and presentations for senior management.
