The Opportunity
The Construction Excess (XS) Executive is accountable for the development, growth, and profitability of The Hartford’s Construction Excess business. This role provides leadership for underwriting strategy and market execution, builds and develops a high-performing team, and partners closely with actuarial, claims, safety/risk engineering, and distribution leaders to deliver sustainable results. The successful candidate will combine strong underwriting judgment with commercial leadership and the ability to translate market opportunity into disciplined growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Portfolio & Profitability Leadership: Own Construction Excess portfolio outcomes including growth, profitability, retention, and risk quality; drive disciplined underwriting and active portfolio management.
- Underwriting Strategy & Governance: Establish and maintain underwriting standards, appetite guidance, authority frameworks, and operating routines that support consistent decision-making and long-term sustainability.
- Market Execution & Distribution Strategy: Lead sales and marketing execution for Construction Excess through strong broker engagement, pipeline management, and territory strategy; deepen key relationships and expand targeted distribution.
- Product & Risk Transfer Solutions: Partner with actuarial and product leadership to develop, refine, and price Construction Excess products and risk transfer solutions; identify opportunities for innovation and differentiation.
- Complex Risk Leadership: Provide senior guidance on high-severity, complex accounts and structures; participate in critical referrals and assist teams with deal positioning and negotiation strategy.
- Stewardship & Client Engagement: Engage externally in stewardship meetings, capabilities presentations, and strategic broker/client discussions to reinforce The Hartford’s value proposition, risk philosophy, and long-term partnership approach.
- Team Leadership & Talent Development: Build, lead, and develop a high-performing Construction Excess team; coach underwriters on technical and commercial acumen; create engagement and accountability while strengthening bench and succession.
- Operating Discipline: Partner with Operations to improve workflows and service routines; ensure underwriting files, documentation, and controls meet internal requirements.
- Reinsurance & Capital Optimization: Evaluate reinsurance opportunities and structures to optimize the Construction Excess risk profile and support profitable growth.
- Collaboration Across the Enterprise: Work closely with claims, safety/risk engineering, finance, legal, and compliance partners; ensure alignment with regulatory requirements and enterprise policies.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree and/or professional designations (e.g., CPCU) preferred.
- 10+ years of relevant P&C underwriting experience with significant construction insurance expertise; excess/umbrella experience strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated success leading teams and building talent; ability to coach and develop underwriters at multiple levels.
- Proven ability to drive profitable growth through broker engagement, market strategy, and disciplined portfolio management.
- Strong analytical and decision-making skills, including ability to evaluate complex risks and structures.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills with executive-level presence.
- Ability to travel as needed to support distribution, client stewardship, and team leadership.
Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
$184,000 - $276,000
