About the unit 

The Emergency Department located at Gerber Hospital is made up of 20 private beds. Patients on this unit range in age from pediatrics to geriatrics and can be admitted for a variety of medical conditions such as heart attack, stroke, fractures, drug overdose, animal bites, severe burns, etc. An average of 70-80 patients are treated within this facility per day. This fast-paced unit provides the opportunity for its employees to work with patients with a variety of diagnosis from all walks of life and gain valuable experience and knowledge along the way.

Scope of work 

Acts as a team member in the delivery of quality patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Provider.  Performs basic skills per department guidelines and communicates observations to members of the health care team. Collects and reports physiological, psychological, sociocultural and spiritual needs of patients and families in coordination with and as delineated by the RN or Provider.  Responsibilities include taking vitals, checking blood sugars, bed bathing, ambulating, wound care, catheterization and acting as a safety attendant for patients. Ensures that required documentation is performed in an accurate and timely manner.

Qualifications 

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • AHA or ARC Basic Life Support (BLS) required within 90 days 
  • Successful completion of a competency-based orientation program
