Job Summary:

Meet our Team:
This role is within the Cloud Platform Engineering group at PayPal. The team is responsible for implementing next generation Cloud Platform with cluster managers (Kubernetes) and containers (docker/containerd) in Multi Cloud (public and private) to support PayPal business teams to scale their applications that serve millions of customers worldwide and process billions of dollars in payments.

The Sr. System & Cloud Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and managing cloud-based systems and solutions. This role involved enabling business and product teams with their cloud requirements, while optimizing cloud resources, ensuring data security, and supporting applications that utilize cloud infrastructure.

Your role is crucial in pushing our technology forward to optimizefunctionality, performance, reliability, and scalability. You will gain an in-depth understanding of our products and services to drive next-generation cloud platform development. This involves estimating engineering efforts, prioritizing projects, planning implementations, and triaging production issues.

Job Description:

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Oversee load balancers, Global Server Load Balancing (GSLB) equipment, Content Delivery Network (CDN) platforms, and troubleshoot client/server issues.
  • Handle proactive and reactive outages, work with vendors, and take ownership of network incidents, escalations, and root cause analysis.
  • Lead backbone network design and architecture for on-premises and public cloud migration, and build hybrid connectivity solutions.
  • Work with business unit leadership, product managers, and customers to develop project objectives, timelines, and feature requirements.
  • Support network system availability, manage network capacity, and ensure compliance with Information Security standards.
  • Deploy equipment, manage SSL certificate hosting and renewal, and build infrastructure for data centers and cloud environments.
  • Implement and continually improve operational procedures, systems, and network engineering best practices.
  • Offer on-call support, monitor infrastructure and hosted services, and troubleshoot complex issues.
  • Manage and influence global teams, provide guidance and support, and mentor team members in areas of expertise.
  • Communicate incident impacts, risks, and mitigation plans to executives, document incident information, and create network engineering documentation and best practices.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience and a Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or related field.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Azure Administrator Associate)
  • 4+ years of experience in cloud engineering or a related field.
  • Proficiency in cloud services (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
  • Experience with infrastructure as code tools (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation).
  • Strong scripting skills (e.g., Python, Bash).
  • Experience with configuration management tools (e.g., Puppet, Chef).
  • Familiarity with containerization and orchestration tools (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Understanding of networking concepts and security best practices.
  • Knowledge of networking concepts, firewalls, VPNs, and load balancers.
  • Participation in a 24x7 on-call rotation.
  • Comfortable with REST, JSON, XML and similar web service concepts
  • Several years’ experience administering Production Linux systems (RHEL/CentOS preferred) in a 24x7 Production environment
  • Strong understanding of the OSI layering model, (HTTP/S, DNS, NFS, SMTP, SSH)
  • Strong understanding of network architecture and protocols for LAN and WAN (TCP, UDP, ICMP, ARP, BGP)
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, deploy, and manage scalable infrastructure in cloud environments (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
  • Operate both cloud-based and Kubernetes systems during our migration journey to Kubernetes
  • Ensure infrastructure follows best security practices (IAM, encryption, secrets management)
  • Build and maintain cloud-native services such as EC2, RDS, Lambda, S3, Azure Functions, etc
  • Implement infrastructure as code (IaC) using Terraform, CloudFormation, or similar tools
  • Design and deploy scalable, highly available, and fault-tolerant systems on cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
  • Implement and manage cloud services, including storage, compute, and security services.
  • Infrastructure Automation: Implement Infrastructure as Code using tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, or Ansible.
  • Monitor and optimize cloud infrastructure performance.

The US national annual pay range for this role is $123,500 to $212,850
