Job Details:

Mercer University School of Medicine (MUSM) invites applications for the position of Department Chair for the Pathology & Clinical Sciences Education Department. This position could be based at any of our three locations - Macon, Savannah, or Columbus, GA.


 

Responsibilities:

The Chair leads a growing, multidisciplinary faculty who are active in research and teaching. The Chair will oversee the growth in academic programs, research infrastructure, and external research funding.  Mercer University School of Medicine is a community-based medical school that educates health professionals to provide care in rural, medically underserved areas of Georgia (http://medicine.mercer.edu).

This is a 12-month, full-time, non-tenure-track appointment. Rank will be determined based on the credentials of the selected candidate.

Duties include:

• Provide leadership and administration of the Pathology & Clinical Sciences Education on all three MUSM campuses in Macon, Savannah, and Columbus, GA;
• Serve as a liaison to all committees or groups as needed or assure representation from the Department of Pathology and Clinical Sciences;
• Support the departmental faculty with emphasis on their responsibilities for the educational and research program;
• Participate in on-going readiness for accreditation and ensure that the Pathology & Clinical Sciences Education participates in continuous quality improvement;
• Engage in teaching activities in small and large group settings;
• Acknowledge and support the mission of Mercer University School of Medicine to provide physicians to rural and medically underserved Georgia;
• Participate and collaborate in scholarly activity and with national organizations that maintain and enhance administrative and educational skills.

Required Qualifications

• MD or PhD degree from an accredited college or university in a related field
• Demonstrate a proven track record of leadership, teaching and excellence in a discipline that complements the Mercer University School of Medicine programs.

Desirable Qualifications:

• American Board Certification in Pathology or related field (preferred, but not required)
• Georgia license to practice medicine or eligibility for a Georgia license (preferred, but not required)

• Demonstrated experience effectively educating and advising medical students.
• Experience in small group, team-based, interdisciplinary teaching, and student evaluation
• Administrative experience and the ability to manage department financial, academic, administrative, and personnel matters
• Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
• Commitment to developing a research focus both personally and with other faculty and students
