SCOPE OF ROLE:

The Toolmaker plans and implements the most effective method of constructing, altering, and repairing a variety of tools and fixtures for drill processes, milling machines, assembly equipment, induction furnaces, prototype parts, and gauges from complex drawings and blueprints. The Toolmaker is also responsible for operating toolroom machines and equipment such as lathes, milling and jigbore machines, surface, O.D. and I.D. grinders, CNC machines, heat treatment furnaces,

band saws, and measuring instruments.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Constructs and reworks new fixtures, parts, gauges, jigs, tools and prototypes from detailed blueprints or drawings
  • Uses a variety of toolroom machinery and measuring instruments to produce the desired results
  • Troubleshoots and repairs old tooling including fixtures, parts, and gauges
  • Constructs engineering prototypes using CNC machines and CAD/CAM systems
  • Repairs production parts and tooling
  • Makes new machinery parts when needed
  • Safely uses the cut-off saw
  • Can machine rough material to clean up size
  • Knows how to calculate the machine feed rates
  • Understand how to calculate required chip load
  • Properly uses the MIG welder
  • Properly uses the TIG welder
  • Understands how to efficiently set up stock and cutters
  • Manual Lathe- Realizes safe set up techniques
  • Manual Lathe - Uses the proper speeds and feeds for turning
  • Manual Lathe - Uses the proper speeds and feeds for boring
  • Manual Lathe - Knows how to engage feed for the correct thread cutting pitch
  • Manual Lathe - Uses compound rest correctly for taper cuts
  • Manual Mill - Realizes safe set up techniques
  • Manual Mill - Uses the proper speeds and feeds for drilling and tapping
  • Manual Mill - Uses the proper speeds and feeds for milling a variety of materials
  • CNC Mill - Assign/determine job processing steps to make complex parts
  • CNC Mill - Mastercam 3D programming (basic tool paths)
  • CNC Mill - Complex Mastercam 3D programing (Dynamic tool paths)
  • CNC Mill - NC indexer (external axis programming and usage)
  • CNC Lathe - Lathe setup (selecting/installing tooling)
  • CNC Lathe - Lathe operation (zeroing, offsets etc)
  • CNC Lathe - Lathe programming (2D tool path)
  • CNC Lathe - Fixture/jaw machining and prep
  • CNC Lathe - Assign/determine job processing steps to make complex parts
  • Grinding - Uses the manual and automatic grinder efficiently and safely
  • Grinding - Understands how to internally grind round stock accurately
  • Grinding - Understands how to externally grind round stock accurately
  • Part Layout/Inspection - Surface plate/guage block/angle and center finding
  • Part Layout/Inspection - Dial bore setup, ID/OD precision measurement
  • Part Layout/Inspection - Gauge process/setup for short order prototype runs
  • Master CAM 2D - Create wireframe geometry
  • Master CAM 2D - Import model and prep for machining
  • Master CAM 2D - Verify proper tool path
  • Training/Communication - Training apprentices
  • Training/Communication - Provide guidance to designer
  • Procurement - Material/supplies
  • Procurement - Tools/equipment

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/COMPETENCIES:

  • Self-starter maintains high ethical standards

  • Ability to operate computers and a variety of toolroom machinery
  • Proficient in MSOffice applications
  • Ability to interpret complex diagrams and blueprints
  • Ability to read and write in English.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in oral and written communications.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS OR EQUIVALENCIES:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Toolmaker certification by the U.S. Department of Labor or Equivalent Experience
  • Ability to operate toolroom equipment, machines, and CNC machines
  • 5 to 7 years of related experience
