Do you share a desire to advance scientific knowledge and capitalise on the revolution in data, automation and predictive sciences to deliver measurable impacts on the success and progression of GSK’s medicine discovery portfolio?

In this newly created position you will lead a function of GSK Research Technologies large-scale data generation, curation, analysis and application to deliver higher PTRS (Probability of Technical and Regulatory Success) assets and unlock upper quartile ambitions.

The incumbent will build a DAPS (Data, Automation and Predictive Sciences) function in the Research Technologies organization in GSK R&D. This function is accountable for establishing, operating, and continually innovating on a central capacity in support of Research Technologies and Research Unit needs in automation and robotics. The goal of this team is to maximize high quality data production at scale for target identification and qualification; medicines development; computation; and model development including AI/ML. This high performing team will build GSK’s talent and capabilities to capitalize on the revolution in data, automation and predictive sciences to deliver measurable impacts on the success and progression of GSK’s medicine discovery portfolio.

Data, Automation and Predictive Sciences function will only be successful by working in close collaboration with other matrix partner teams within Research Technologies functions, in the Research Units (all therapeutic areas), GSK Onyx team (Tech/IT), R&D AIML team and Risk & Compliance.

The position is based 2-3 days per week in either Upper Providence (US) or Stevenage (UK).

This role will provide YOU the opportunity to lead key activities to progress YOUR career, these responsibilities include some of the following:

  • Build and lead a high-performing team with relevant life sciences, engineering, and data science subject matter expertise that works with business partners to solve high value research problems with a deep focus on value realisation to drive productivity.

  • Work with partners in other R+D and Tech functions, including Onyx, to ensure DAPS/Research Tech partnership on the design and operation of an effective and evolving data reuse strategy for Research that maximises the value of GSK’s data to drive research productivity and unlock upper quartile ambitions, working across DAPS and Research to drive uptake.

  • Own automation and robotics capital investment and execution strategy, in high throughput genetics, genomics, screening, chemistry, oligonucleotide, protein/antibody/ADC engineering and production, cell culture/differentiation, and ADMET.  Make large-scale data generation, analysis, and prediction an industry-leading competitive advantage for GSK.  This includes harmonization of current robotic capabilities to build both capital and expertise critical mass.

  • Champion/drive a “predict-first” culture to maximize the use of predictive technology via working with experimental line leaders to define and implement ways of working that are consistent with “FAIR” data practices.

  • Support the implementation and delivery of a 3-year Systems Investment Plan that seeks to maximise potential impact to drive research productivity upper quartile ambitions.

  • Lead Data Sciences teams aligned by Research Technologies Partner functions that understand their data asset, data sciences and analytics needs, identify high priority focus areas; ensure the safe and effective use of data; and work alongside scientists to develop and embed solutions accordingly; leveraging new capabilities e.g. cloud-first technologies in partnership with the relevant Tech/IT organizations

  • Develop, optimize, scale and embed proprietary predictive modelling capabilities in collaboration with relevant Research Technologies functions to deliver improved cycle times and probability of success across all modalities.

  • Establish and maintain relationships with internal and external partners to stay abreast of emerging trends and technologies in data science and scientific computation.

  • Develop and foster a team culture of collaboration, curiosity, quality, peer review and consistency and ensure continuous improvement with a relentless focus on enabling value realisation through user uptake.

  • Have a strong working relationship with RD Tech Lab Engineering, Vaccines and MDS automation teams

  • Work with leaders in DA&PS, Research Technologies, R&D Tech to determine when to industrialize approaches, e.g. when a broader user base within the business would be a benefit to the business.

  • With Research Technologies stakeholders, develop a business plan to drive the value of our data as an asset from data generation to consumption; leverage our data to enable the selection of the best targets and the design of the best molecules to drive the discovery portfolio.

  • Inspire and drive a culture of excellence and innovation in automation, engineering, data science, modelling and informatics that will attract talent and grow expertise to lead the industry in key areas of modelling capabilities that enable pipeline success.

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • MSc/PhD in the Life Sciences, Data Science, Engineering, or related discipline

  • Experience in automation, data science, and engineering experience in biomedical research and drug discovery.

  • Experience in scientific disciplines of automation engineering, data science, and drug discovery and development, including biology, chemistry, toxicology, and pharmacology.

  • Experience in the development and application of computational approaches and infrastructure in drug discovery to scale data analysis.

  • Understanding of data flows from automation to align with GSKs ambition to make data retrievable, usable and acceptable for data reuse

  • Experience in identifying and mapping out scientific areas suitable for automation in a multiyear plan with clear outputs and impact on the GSK portfolio

  • Understanding of systems, computational ‘bots’ and requirements for AI/ML to design systems that enable analysis of data.

  • Experience in leading teams in large matrix organizations, to partner with, influence, and coordinate with key stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • Experience in leading teams that positively impacted progression of the discovery portfolio via leading in a matrix setting at all levels and leveraging Subject Matter Experts to define standards and ensure fit for purpose solutions.

  • Ability to manage deployed staff to functional scientific lines

  • Experience with instrumentation and automation in a variety of areas including pre-clinical target identification and qualification

  • Highly experienced relationship builder and influential in working across boundaries to drive success.

  • Experience driving technology transformation with multiple stakeholders in alignment with business objectives leading to positive outcomes.

  • Experience aligning data strategy with business objectives.

  • Experience in driving uptake of solutions across the matrix.

  • Experience in driving innovation in predictive technology.

  • Experience with state-of-the-art high-performance computing and its application to current scientific problems.

  • Deep expertise in one or more of the following areas: mathematical & statistical modelling, atomistic simulation, multiparameter optimisation, machine learning, computational chemistry, cheminformatics, quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR) modelling.
