The School of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology is seeking to hire a senior technical executive to work closely with academic, technical and research staff and students to support the teaching labs and central research labs operation and safety. He/She will provide support to teaching lab by preparing lab consumables, equipment and training. He/She will assist academic, teaching assistants, research staff and students on experimental procedure, scientific equipment operation and maintenance to assist in teaching and research activities in the school.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in designing/modifying and setting up undergraduate teaching experiments, including preparing, conducting, and supervising laboratory lessons for chemical and biological-related experiments.

  • Support faculty, research staff, and students in carrying out research activities, including operating, maintaining, and training on common lab equipment.

  • Guide new and inexperienced users in the operation of laboratory equipment.

  • Support the manager in performing diagnostic tests and in-house repair processes in the event of equipment failure; engage vendors for periodic calibration and preventive maintenance.

  • Ensure adequate lab consumables and manage purchasing of materials and inventory control.

  • Liaise with suppliers on equipment setup, repair and maintenance.

  • Conduct and maintain good laboratory housekeeping and safe laboratory practices.  

  • Carry out strategic budget proposals and track expenses associated with lab equipment and consumables.

  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the reporting officer and school management.

Skills and qualifications:

  • Diploma/degree in process, engineering, applied science or equivalent with at least 2 years’ working experience in lab.

  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.

  • Experience in handling, operating, and maintaining scientific and laboratory equipment such as TGA/DSC, EA, XRD, gas and liquid chromatography, autoclaves, etc.

  • Basic knowledge of cell and tissue culture, protein analysis, and fermentation.

  • Effective record-keeping of lab chemicals, consumables, equipment inventories, and maintenance records.

  • Laboratory support and management, with experience in writing standard operating procedures and risk assessments.

  • Able to work independently and effectively under pressure in a fast-paced environment.

  • High level of safety awareness and good knowledge of workplace safety.

  • Ability to multi-task.

  • Good situational awareness.

  • Effective communication.
