Overview

As the Director, Corporate Communications you will be central to driving forward Canopy Growth’s vision of unleashing the power of cannabis to improve lives. Working with a team of talented professionals articulating the Company’s strategy to both external and internal stakeholders, you must be a passionate communicator and have the ability to manage a wide range of communication activities across multiple subjects, teams, and geographies.  

As a leader, you will work closely with the Investor Relations, Legal and Government Relations, and Human Resources organizations and their executives to provide critical communications counsel and partnership on shared business priorities. You will also work closely with the Corporate communications team to maintain a proactive media relations strategy, oversee social and digital communications, and handle emerging issues while demonstrating a calm professionalism required to achieve positive outcomes.

Beyond day-to-day execution, this role is for a forward-thinking professional capable of finding and implementing new ways to communicate Canopy’s ambitious vision. The Director – Corporate Communications will also play a critical role in developing and executing compelling internal communications to engage and inspire Canopy Growth team members.

Finally, this role has direct accountability for a wide range of business and financial communications materials and requires comfort, experience, and a willingness to learn to ensure all such materials are thoughtfully created and at all times correct so a critical eye for detail is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Media relations, issues management, social media and digital communications, and executive messaging.

  • Oversee and execute strategic communications plans for internal and external audiences to articulate Canopy Growth’s strategy and vision, including as related to strategic projects, organizational change initiatives, as well as mergers and acquisitions.

  • Oversee and implement communications programs to support Canopy Growth’s government, regulatory, medical, and safety related activities.

  • Develop strategic communications that further the Company’s objectives with an emphasis on direct communications including statements, video, social, op-eds.

  • Work closely with Investor Relations and develop financial communications including for Quarterly as well as Annual Earnings Reports including executive media prep, messaging, and internal communications.

  • Lead communications planning to demonstrate Canopy Growth’s Innovation agenda including identifying new avenues and tools to demonstrate the Company’s leadership.

  • Act as a communications point-person on media relations and issues management.

  • Ensure that the Company and leadership’s tone in effectively captured while developing compelling internal communications in support of the Company’s evolution.

  • Partner with the VP of Corporate Communications to develop a comprehensive content calendar for external and internal communication channels.

  • Manage external agency partners in their support for corporate communications activities.

  • Oversee and enhance executive reporting on communications and media relations.

  • Lead the development of communications collateral including corporate videos, b-roll, corporate brand standards, and more.

  • Demonstrate professionalism and the utmost respect for confidentiality.

Required Skills and Education

  • Minimum 10+ years of direct communications experience with demonstrated corporate and/or executive communications background.

  • Demonstrated experience as a collaborative people leader (current role will be an individual contributor with potential for future people leadership).

  • Preference for previous experience in a fast-paced sector or environment including but not limited to companies going through rapid growth, new and emerging sectors, or political offices.

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, marketing, or related field required.

  • Experience advancing financial, M&A, or organizational change communications a strong asset.

  • Exceptional writing, editing and storytelling skills.

  • Comfort and confidence in leading media relations.

  • Outstanding project management skills.

  • Experience and enjoyment of fast-moving and agile environments where flexibility is key.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a collaborative spirit.

  • Ability to meet deadlines and balance multiple priorities.

  • Commitment to evolving communications based on metrics, research, and feedback.

  • High energy, outgoing, with a “can do” personality. Ability to thrive in a changing environment.
