Your Opportunity

The position summary states the general nature and purpose of the job. Overall accountabilities are defined in this section.

Supports all activities of feed manufacturing operations, including managing design/engineering/construction, equipment replacements, and drives continues improvement plan for all company owned feed mills. Responsible for driving a culture of efficiency and focus reduction of unplanned downtimes. Assist and implements an immediate plan during feed mill breakdown events. This is a staff, support service ro1e position to assist all divisional feed mill managers to achieve business targets and goals. Aids corporate management in formulating and administering organization policies by performing the following duties personally or through subordinates.

Core Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the support of efficient, low cost and high-quality production of 125,000-160,000 tons of swine feed weekly at 13 domestic and international feed mill site.

  • Assesses feed manufacturing process capabilities and needs. Evaluates, reviews, recommends, and justifies, supports needed capital projects.

  • Responsible for leading projects from requirements definition through deployment, identifying schedules, scopes, budget estimations, and implementation plans, including risk mitigation.

  • Coordinates internal and external resources to ensure that projects adhere to scope, schedule, and budget. Analyze project status and, when necessary, revise the scope, schedule, or budget to ensure that project requirements can be met.

  • Works closely with all feed mill managers to develop and achieve an operating budget per year and help develop a world class organization of approximately 300 associates.

  • Works closely with the transportation department to ensure accurate and timely feed availability to animals.

  • Works closely with the ingredient procurement and nutritional departments to insure active participation in quality control of the ingredients and feed formulation process.

  • Provides support to the feed mill preventive maintenance programs to ensure optimum utilization/efficiency and to avoid unplanned breakdowns. Provides technical support on all major equipment lines and major construction projects.

  • Provides support and guidance in the development of associates, especially leadership positions. Provides interview and technical training as requested by divisional management.

  • Participates in formulating and administering company feed milling policies and developing long range goals and objectives for functional areas of responsibility.

  • Reviews analyses of activities, costs, operations, and forecast data to determine department progress toward stated goals and objectives.

  • Confers with other administrative personnel to review achievements and discuss required changes in goals or objectives resulting from current-status, and conditions.

  • Responsible for understanding and complying with all company Safety, EMS and Animal Wellbeing, policies and procedures in the performance of their job duties.

  • Responsible for understanding compliance with all environmental laws and procedures to which Smithfield Hog Production Division subscribes.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform the essential functions

  • Bachelor's degree in agriculture, animal science, business administration or similar from an accredited four-year college  and 5+ years relevant experience; or equivalent combination of experience and education.

  • 2+ years of demonstrated experience in team management/development or project leadership is required

  • Feed Mill site management experience for multiple locations strongly preferred.

  • Engineering knowledge and practical experience, and swine production experience preferred.

  • Experience in(1) managing the feed planning and budget process, (2) coordinating feed delivery functions preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of feed quality and benchmarking techniques preferred.

  • Strong financial focus and efficiency driven management style preferred.

  • Experience in budgeting and financial performance measurements.

  • Strong communication skills, team building and customer service in support service position.

  • Strong mechanical, engineering, and technical equipment diagnostic skills.

  • Significant travel and overnight required, approx. 75-100 nights/ year.

  • Reads and understands the company's emergency notification process and responsible for reviewing policies at all work sites.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and guidance to employees in the Feed Mill Department.

  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and assisting in providing appropriate resolutions.
