Purpose:

The role of Flex Technician is to perform a range of routine activities to support effective completion of projects and meet the customer’s contractual agreements. In this dynamic position, you may be placed in different departments or teams on a week-to-week basis, providing vital support wherever it's needed most and giving the role holder a unique opportunity to experience working with multiple teams in multiple areas. 

The role holder will perform lab admin and housekeeping activities, basic routine analysis, food production and food product development and work in accordance with the food quality and safety standards and pharmaceutical GMP across different departments. There will a requirement to work at both the Reading sites and the Wokingham site of RSSL.

Primary Accountabilities / Responsibilities:

Technical

  • Working in different laboratories as demand requires Provide high quality customer service at all times by ensuring effective organisation of assigned workload, integrity of analytical data generated and timely/accurate provision of results.

  • Perform a range of basic routine analysis, product manufacturing and sample preparation under supervision of a senior member of staff.

  • Perform laboratory tasks following specified methodologies, such as Standard Operating Procedures.

  • Use of specified instrumentation and laboratory equipment, including calibration where required. Produce reliable, accurate data and keep accurate records of laboratory work undertaken and results.

  • Follow product formulations and methods considering standard operating procedures and food safety to produce food products at bench scale or manufacturing.

  • Operate basic lab and manufacturing equipment as directed in RSSL’s CCC.

  • Be competent in the use of generic and specific software packages required for the role: Laboratory’s LIMS system, Q-Pulse, etc.

  • Perform admin and housekeeping duties as directed.

  • Work as part of an efficient team. Have the confidence to work in different teams across the laboratories as demand requires.

QEHS

  • Work to the highest standards of safety and quality by ensuring that appropriate COSHHs, risk assessments and SOPs are understood and followed.

  • Complete assigned quality actions on a timely manner.

  • Maintain a clean, tidy and safe working environment.

  • Ensure training records are accurate and up to date at all times.

Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Language Requirements:

  • Educated to A / HNC level in a relevant scientific discipline

  • Accountable, honest, hardworking and able to work efficiently in a team

  • Flexible and adaptable in a workplace and enjoys the challenge to adapt to different teams and working environments

  • Meticulous attention to detail and an ability to follow written instructions.

  • Good written and verbal communication skills.

  • Self motivated, enthusiastic and quick to learn.

  • Well organized and capable of working on multiple activities concurrently.

  • Able to perform repetitive work to high standards in high throughput environment

  • Worked in a team in a high throughput environment

  • A passion for science

  • English fluency (written and spoken)
