Key Responsibilities:
• Project leader and chief engineer for the development of endoluminal robotic systems within R&T
• Architect product concepts that address unmet clinical needs, align with clinical workflows, and enable safe and effective therapy
• Define and coordinate scope of work, budget, and deliverables of multiple teams (internal and external), project workstreams, and products required for the ELR system
• Drive aggressive but achievable schedules and strive for on-time delivery of key milestones and overall project timelines
• Hold team meetings and manage internal communication within the team
• Report ELR project strategy, objectives, and project progress to upper-level leadership
• Exhibit workflow agility and clear communication to handle changes in strategy and priorities
• Invent and develop strategic intellectual property that advances and protects product portfolios
• Develop talent and leadership of members of the Surgical R&T team as a people-focused leader
• Collaborate with R&D and R&T leaders across Medtronic to understand technology gaps, product roadmaps, and technology needs
• Actively promote and lead knowledge sharing through presentations, meetings, seminars, collaborative research, and companywide communications
• Travel domestically and internationally to other Medtronic facilities, conferences, strategic partners, and clinical sites.
Qualifications:
Must Have: Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor's degree
• 15+ years of experience in R&D of medical devices
• 10+ years of project leadership experience, Or advanced degree with a minimum 13 years of experience in R&D of medical devices and 10+ years of project leadership experience.
Preferred Skills and Experiences:
• Extensive knowledge and experience with robotic system design, architecture, and development
• Knowledge and experience in current endoluminal techniques, tools, and clinical applications
• Experience developing endoluminal robotic systems (instrumentation, capital hardware, software, visualization, workflows, user experience)
• Experience managing external design firms participating in internal, large scale projects
• Experience independently managing and prioritizing multiple projects or complex systems with resources, timelines, and budgeting
• Experience developing and releasing medical devices through a quality management system
• Experience developing software for medical devices using Agile development process
• Knowledge of manufacturing processes - both internal manufacturing and external partnerships with contract manufacturers
• Experience negotiating and defining formal agreements for strategic partnerships with other companies
• Track record of teaching and mentoring in technical areas of medical devices
• Experience in establishing, working within, and growing innovation teams and/or small businesses
• Comfort with ambiguity and seeks to design creative solutions to previously unsolved problems
• Track record as a continuous learner who adapts quickly, adapts positively to change, and drives innovation
• Active listener, strong and clear communicator, confident presenter, and excellent written communication skills
Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.
Plans, directs and implements all aspects of the company's design and development of new medical device products or software systems.
May develop, evaluate, implement and maintain technical quality assurance and control systems or reliability systems and standards pertaining to materials, techniques, or company products.
Oversees the investigation and evaluation of existing technologies.
Guides the conceptualization of new methodologies, materials, machines, processes or products.
Directs the development of new concepts from initial design to market release.
Manages feasibility studies of the design to determine if capable of functioning as intended.
Monitors documentation maintenance throughout all phases of research and development.
Organizes the coordination of activities with outside suppliers and consultants to ensure timely delivery.
Selects, develops and evaluates personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the function.
PROGRAM MANAGEMENT CAREER STREAM: Program Managers and Directors focus on tactical, operational activities for a major program with broad or ongoing impact. Levels within the program management career stream typically accomplish program objectives through matrixed employee teams and / or vendors who are not direct reports but for which the incumbent has direct accountability to lead. The majority of time is spent overseeing their area of responsibility, managing program/team performance, communicating project and operational developments, planning, prioritizing and / or directing the responsibilities of program team members. Responsible for changing or improving upon entire processes or systems using significant conceptualizing, reasoning and interpretation skills.
Communication and Influence: Communicates and conducts briefings with senior or executive leadership regarding new strategic program proposals and critical program outcomes.
Serves as principal spokesperson for multiple programs, interacting with leaders and executives on highly significant matters .
Influences across functions, businesses and with external stakeholders to gain support of strategic programs where there are competing objectives and perspectives .
Leadership and Talent Management: Leads a matrixed large unit that typically includes multiple teams led by Program Managers and/or vendors.
Approves tasks and schedule necessary for successful program execution.
Not directly responsible for hire or fire decisions and people management.
