The Payne Institute Earth Observation Group (EOG) is accepting applications for a computer system administrator and programmer. This position includes managing EOG’s satellite data ingestion/processing/distribution pipeline, plus data access via the internet. Programming tasks will include development of automation tools to increase the efficiency and stability of the pipeline, plus user interfaces for specialized software modules.

EOG runs proprietary software and scripts in house and is adapting cloud platforms for data processing. You will learn how to operate the in-house tools while working with the team to adapt cloud platforms in the pipeline.

You will need to frequently communicate with the Mines Information Technology department for problem solving and adhere to the latest security requirements. You will also communicate with EOG team members to modify/grow the processing pipeline with limitations of resources in mind.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • System administration and data management (70%)
    • Take the lead in managing the ingestion, processing, distribution, and archiving of satellite imagery and derived products
    • Use programming skills to develop tools to support missions
    • Establishing new product generation pipelines
    • Assist with website management and content creation (including web maps) for data distribution
    • Create report of system status and data access
  • Programming (30%)
    • Participate in development and improvement of software for the monitoring of the product generation system, detection alerts, and user interfaces for specialized software modules to bypass bottlenecks

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • At least 2 years of experience working in Linux environments
  • Ability to secure and hold U.S. security clearance in order to access federal records through NOAA

Preferred Qualifications

  • Profound knowledge of Linux
  • Knowledge of High-Performance Computing (HPC) task management (SLURM)
  • Programming Skills
    (Required) Python, BASH
    (Optional) IDL, JavaScript, SQL, Matlab, Ruby
  • Basic networking skills – VPN, Firewalls, Routing
  • Deploying Virtual Machines (Docker)
  • Familiar with web development
    • Bootstrap framework
    • Node.js
  • Familiar with server administration
  • Database management (PostgreSQL preferred)
  • Web server management (Apache web server)
  • Cloud computing platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP, etc.)
  • Familiar with GIS and remote sensing applications
    • ArcGIS, QGIS, ENVI
    • Web mapping tools (Leaflet, Google Map API, Mapbox, etc.)
    • Google Earth Engine
  • Developing and maintaining web map to display data
  • Familiar with Microsoft Office Suite - especially Excel

Annual Rate and Benefits 

 

$70,000-$75,000 annually
