Our Diagnostic Medical Sonographer performs diagnostic sonographic imaging through the application of non-ionizing, high-frequency sound waves for patients of all ages as directed by physicians. A caregiver in this position works variable shifts.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Perform ultrasound studies (i.e. obstetrical, GYN, abdominal, retro peritoneal, small parts, pediatric, and vascular).
Consult with referring physician regarding patients' medical history and selection of appropriate procedures and equipment required for proper diagnosis; reviews charts, previous reports, and requisition prior to the exam.
Educate patients regarding procedures, equipment, and exams to ensure understanding and cooperation.
Ensure patients' comfort and safety during and after the exam.
Schedule all emergency patients for diagnostic ultrasound procedures.
Monitor all appointments scheduled or ultrasound examinations; performs preliminary research on patients when preparations are not provided; determines priority of patients based on the daily schedules.
Acquire, archive, transmit, and print images via PACS - when applicable, knowledgeable in afterhours transmission of images and appropriate paperwork - immediately reports any malfunctions to help desk and PACS Administrator.
Perform checks on ultrasound equipment to assure proper function of equipment and notify clinical engineering of any equipment malfunctions.
Ensure exam rooms are adequately supplied with linen and related medical supplies.
Assist with clinical instruction of ultrasound students and residents, assists with in-service education of staff members, assist with orienting new employees to the equipment, department procedures and scanning protocols; provides demonstration of ultrasound equipment for staff and visitors.
Assist in new investigative techniques, procedures, and equipment; maintains state-of-the-art knowledge in the field through self-motivated education and attendance of appropriate conferences and symposiums.
RDMS must be maintained and in good standing.
If working within the Imaging Institute, you may be required to perform non-invasive vascular studies to include veins, arteries, pulse volume readings and assist the physician during invasive studies.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Graduate of an accredited school in Diagnostic Medical Sonography and in good standing.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
If working within the OBGYN/Women’s Health Institute:
Registered Diagnostic Sonographer (RDMS) through the American Registry for Diagnostic.
Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) within one year of hire.
Certification within OB/GYN (RDMS, OB/GYN) must be obtained within one year of hire.
If working within the Imaging Institute:
Registered Diagnostic Sonographer (RDMS) through the American Registry for Diagnostic.
Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) RT(S) or RT(VS) upon hire.
Certification within Abdominal (RDMS, AB), OB/GYN (RDMS, OB/GYN)
OR Vascular (RVT, VT) through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) upon hire.
