Red Hat’s Kernel Fundamental Technologies (KFT) Team is looking for a Principal Software Engineer to join our team. In this role, you will work to influence the direction of technology at the core of Linux kernel and Red Hat Enterprise Linux. You will be part of a team focused on kernel development that will include both kernel and user space packages. Most of the work is centered around Linux Kernel development, implementation and defect work upstream and downstream. As a Principal Software Engineer, you will also work collaboratively with the Quality Engineering (QE), Sustaining Engineering, and Continuous Integration (CI) development teams in support of Red Hat Enterprise Linux releases.

What will you do

  • Perform design, implementation, and review of Linux kernel code

  • Work with colleagues to determine Memory Management implementation in RHEL releases

  • Participate in the broader upstream Linux community

  • Collaborate with the Engineering, QE, Product Management, Documentation, Partner Ecosystem and product build teams, as well as the open source community

  • Work with RHEL customers and partners to determine monitoring and observability requirements and design features to satisfy those requirements

  • Respond to escalations and work with Sustaining Engineering, Customer Experience Engagement, QE and partners to troubleshoot and resolve problems

  • Communicate and help coordinate dates, deliverables, feature requirements, roadmaps, etc.

  • Review and backport fixes to the Red Hat Enterprise Linux releases

  • Mentor other associates to facilitate continuous learning

What will you bring

  • Fluent in the C programming language

  • Expertise in Linux kernel development 

  • Excellent knowledge of Linux scripting tools like Bash and Python

  • Expert user of Git version control system

  • Familiarity of embedded systems and their ecosystems

  • Expertise of upstream Linux kernel patch posting procedures, or experience with upstream development

  • Experience with backporting upstream code to Linux distributions, kernel configuration, building, and testing

  • Solid written and verbal communication skills in English
