Job Summary

The Radiology Assistant (RA) is a health care professional certified and registered in radiology and is credentialed by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) to provide primary health care services in medical imaging with physician supervision. Within the physician-RA relationship and under the supervision, guidance and discretion of the supervising physician, RA's exercise autonomy in decision making in the role of primary health care provider with regard to patient assessment, patient management and in providing a broad range of medical imaging and interventional services.

                         

Job Details

Responsibilities:

  • Evaluates the daily schedule of procedures with the supervising physician and determines where his/her skills will be utilized.
  • After demonstrating competency and under the guidance, supervision and discretion of the supervising physician, performs procedures including, but not limited to: Fluoroscopic procedures, Ultrasound guided biopsies and/or drainages, CT guided biopsies and/or drainages, Arthrograms, Myelograms, Vascular Access Procedures including Venograms/Arteriograms, Venous Access Procedures including declots/Permacath Placement/Central Line Placement, IVC Filter Placement, Fistulgrams, Nephrostograms, Cholangiograms, Gastrostomies and any other procedures the radiologist deems necessary.
  • Evaluates medical images, reviews preliminary reports and images with a supervising physician and prepares technical reports that will be reviewed and signed off by the supervising physician.
  • Assesses and evaluates the physiological and psychological responsiveness of each patient.
  • Participates in patient management, including prescriptive acquisition following review with the supervision physician.
  • Administers and/or orders intravenous medication and contrast media, under the supervision of a physician and record documentation in the medical record.
  • Maintains values congruent with the Code of Ethics, as well as adheres to national, institutional and/or departmental standards, policies and procedures regarding the standards of care for patients.
  • Maintains patient modesty and comfort; performs basic nursing functions; reports any change in patient condition or behavior; respects confidentiality of patient records and maintains professional demeanor.
  • Supports Corporate Compliance Initiatives: Attends departmental meetings/in-services to maintain current knowledge and understanding of appropriate compliance-related process in his/her job, department, and entity.
  • Understands his/her obligations to report activity that is illegal and unethical.
  • Understands the process of reporting illegal or fraudulent activity via the Compliance Hotline. Demonstrates requirements of HIPPA regulations within scope of job responsibilities.
  • Provides Age Specific Care: Ability to care for neonatal, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients by demonstrating competency in the behavioral, growth and development, and psychosocial needs of the population.
  • Ability to assess and identify signs and symptoms of abuse and/or neglect for all populations served.
  • Patient/Family Education: Assesses the patients' readiness and need for learning, considering religious, culture, physical, and psychosocial, beliefs and/or limitations.
  • Determines the best methodology to deliver the education and receives verbal feedback and/or return demonstration to validate learning.
  • Provides verbal and/or written instructions for tests/procedures, diagnosis and discharges when appropriate.
  • Documents what education has been taught, patients' response and collaboration with any member of the health care team in coordination of education.
  • Demonstrates understanding that all employees are accountability for patient safety.
  • Recognizes the importance of reporting errors and near misses to protect and service the patient and improve processes.
  • Encourages patients to be active partners in their care to prevent harm or injury.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • Must be a graduate of an educational program recognized by the ARRT.
  • Must be certified and be in ACTIVE standing with the ARRT.
  • Validation of participating on Continuing Education with a minimum of 50 credit hours in each biannual period.

Certifications:

  • Must be a Registered Technologist in Radiology credentialed by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists and must be a Registered Radiologist Assistant credentialed by with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists - R.R.A., RT(R)(ARRT).
  • Current state radiologic license as a Radiographer required.
  • Current license as Radiologist Assistant with the State Medical Board of Ohio required.
  • Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required.

Complexity of Work:

  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work unsupervised or with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Work Experience:

  • Minimum three years experience as a Registered Radiology Technologist.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift or assist with lifting patients of varying weight and manipulate equipment daily.
  • Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time.
  • Must be knowledgeable and demonstrate competency in all OSHA requirements. Must demonstrate the use of MSDS appropriately.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
