Abbott Ireland Diabetes Care Division Donegal 

The Abbott Diabetes Care division based in Donegal Town manufactures FreeStyle blood glucose test strips and FreeStyle Sensors for use in diabetes management. Among Abbott Diabetes Care leading brands are the FreeStyle Precision, FreeStyle Lite and FreeStyle Libre system. 

Purpose of the Job:

The Technical Excellence Engineer is responsible for managing and continuously improving the training curriculum for all lab personnel. This includes training new lab operations staff to competency in collaboration with relevant laboratory supervisors. The engineer will ensure all lab staff are enrolled in ongoing training programs, which encompass both on-the-job competencies and classroom training. Additionally, the role involves executing operational excellence projects, engineering projects, and continuous improvement initiatives within the lab environments and parent technical function. This position ensures the lab operates efficiently, safely, and in compliance with all relevant standards and procedures.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Training and Development:
    • Conduct comprehensive training programs for all new hires in the laboratory.
    • Develop and update training materials and documentation to ensure consistency and compliance.
    • Implement a continuous training curriculum for all lab staff to maintain high competency levels in procedures.

  • Operational Excellence:
    • Lead and participate in operational excellence projects aimed at improving lab efficiency and effectiveness.
    • Implement best practices and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance lab operations.

  • Engineering Projects:
    • Plan, coordinate, and execute engineering projects within the lab environment.
    • Validate new processes and develop technical documentation for the technical department, which includes the laboratories.

  • Continuous Improvement:
    • Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement solutions to enhance productivity, quality, and cost-effectiveness.
    • Conduct operational excellence assessments and develop plans to promote continuous improvement.
    • Continuously review procedures and implement procedural updates to ensure optimal laboratory performance.

  • Compliance and Safety:
    • Ensure all lab activities comply with relevant policies, procedures, and safety standards.
    • Promote a culture of safety and environmental responsibility within the lab.

  • Project Management:
    • Manage capital projects from inception to completion, ensuring timely and successful delivery.
    • Coordinate and implement process and equipment projects to support lab operations.

Education & Competencies:

  • Education:
    • Third level qualification or trade certificate in an Engineering, Science, or Manufacturing discipline.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum 3 years of work experience in an engineering or manufacturing environment preferred.
    • Experience in a supervisory or training role is an advantage.
  • Skills:
    • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.
    • Proficiency in developing technical documentation and training materials.
