Job Summary:

To perform technical functions relating to the administration of anesthesia under the direction of an anesthesiologist including set-up, troubleshooting, evaluation, and operation of equipment.

Education & Experience

High School Diploma/GED plus one (1) year of related experience, or equivalent combination of education/experience.

Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required:  N/A

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of anesthesiology principles and practices. Knowledge of medical equipment and supplies utilized in anesthetic procedures. Skill in preparing operating room for required purposes. Verbal and written communication skills. Interpersonal skills.  Ability to react calmly in emergency situations.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in the physiological monitoring of patients and the preparation of drugs, fluids, anesthetics, and equipment for procedures requiring anesthesia.
  • Determines equipment and supply needs and prepares rooms for procedures to include setting up sterile trays.
  • Assists in inserting arterial catheter needles and brachial and internal jugular catheters; attaches to transducers and flushes with saline solution; obtains arterial blood gasses and assists in the analysis of blood gases.
  • Cleans and performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs on equipment.
  • Monitors and transports patients.
  • Complies with safety and infection control standards and environmental practices.

Physical and Environmental Demands

Requires frequent exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, constant handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, constant exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, frequent travelling to offsite locations, frequent activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, constant work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, constant bending, occasional lifting and carrying more than 100 pounds, occasional climbing, occasional crawling, frequent crouching/stooping, frequent kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, constant reaching, occasional sitting, constant standing, constant twisting, and constant walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
