Job Title:

Radiation Safety Specialist - Environmental Health & Safety

Job Summary:

To participate in maintaining compliance with State and Federal regulations concerning radioactive materials and/or radiation generating devices through the implementation of the radiation/laser safety programs. To collaborate with all personnel to assure safe work practices relative to the use of radiation and/or lasers.

Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree in Health Physics, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, or related science degree. One (1) year of related experience in a field that uses radiation or requires familiarity with radiation safe use requirements or radiation safety preferred

or

Equivalent combination of education/experience.

Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required:  NA

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Working knowledge of radiation detection equipment.  Experience in the handling of radioactive materials.  A general understanding of basic radiation types and characteristics of each.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains personnel dosimetry program.
  • Conducts quarterly laboratory radiation surveys and safety inspections.
  • Maintains radioactive material and source inventory through the collection, analysis, and documentation of monthly utilization logs submitted by laboratory principal investigators.
  • Performs initial radiation surveys on all incoming radioactive packages to ensure package integrity and reduce the threat of contamination.
  • Prepares and decontaminates I-131 therapy patient room.
  • Responds to radiation alarms and/or emergency response calls.
  • Collects, sorts, documents, and disposes of radioactive wastes.
  • Maintains office files and databases concerning all aspects of radiation safety program.
  • Conducts audits of laser systems and safety precautions.

    Physical and Environmental Demands
    Requires frequent exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, occasional handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, constant exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, frequent work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, constant bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 75 pounds, occasional climbing, occasional crawling, occasional crouching/stooping, occasional driving, occasional kneeling, frequent pushing/pulling, frequent reaching, constant sitting, constant standing, frequent twisting, and constant walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
