Position Summary...

Job Summary

As a Staff Software Engineer in the Cloud and Data Foundations organization at Walmart, you will play a strategic and hands-on technical role in owning, designing, building, and maintaining high-quality software solutions focused on logging platform engineering—specifically leveraging OpenObserve. You will drive technical direction and set standards for robust, scalable, and maintainable logging solutions that enable observability across Walmart’s cloud and distributed systems. We are seeking engineers who bring deep technical expertise in observability and logging systems, a passion for automation and operational excellence, and the ability to influence and mentor engineering teams. You will partner closely with cross-functional leaders to shape the future of Walmart’s logging and observability capabilities at a global scale.

About the team

Managed Log Search team is part of the Observability organization within Cloud and Data Foundations at Walmart. Our mission is to provide seamless, efficient, and reliable log management and analytics with client-side abstractions built on OpenObserve and related technologies, in a multi-cloud, polyglot environment. By building intuitive, standards-based logging abstraction layers, the team enables Walmart Global Tech developers to work efficiently across diverse logging, triage and analytics systems deployed as PaaS and IaaS solutions.

What You’ll Do

  • Set technical vision and lead the design and delivery of production-grade software for logging and observability systems using Rust, Golang or similar languages, ensuring adherence to best practices in code quality, performance, and maintainability.
  • Architect and drive the evolution of OpenObserve-based logging abstraction frameworks for Walmart’s enterprise-scale needs.
  • Identify, design, and deliver strategic features for the logging platform, enhancing operational efficiency, reliability, and scalability for distributed systems.
  • Lead the full development lifecycle for logging solutions, from conceptual design through deployment and ongoing support, influencing technical decisions across teams.
  • Partner with product managers, architects, and engineering leaders to define technical direction and influence platform strategy.
  • Mentor and coach engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement.
  • Support customer application teams and platform partners during incident resolution, demonstrating high customer empathy and a commitment to operational excellence.

What You’ll Bring

  • 8+ years of professional experience in software engineering, with a proven record of designing and delivering complex, high-quality solutions at scale.
  • Expertise in Rust, Golang and advanced proficiency with DevOps tools such as Jenkins, Ansible.
  • Demonstrated success architecting and implementing client-side abstraction layers for large-scale logging and observability platforms.
  • Advanced knowledge of logging or analytics systems, such as OpenObserve, Elasticsearch, Splunk, or OpenSearch.
  • Deep understanding and commitment to operational excellence in logging systems management.
  • Preferred Skill: Experience developing automation workflows with AI engineering frameworks like LangChain, vector databases, MCPs, and large language models (LLMs) to enable seamless orchestration of complex operational tasks.
