JOB DESCRIPTION

KMSP/WFTC is actively seeking a highly skilled Director of Engineering to step into a pivotal leadership role within our technical operations. Your Role and Responsibilities

Work closely with the VP of Engineering, you will direct our team of station engineers and serve as the primary lead for addressing time-sensitive and challenging maintenance issues. This position demands a clear understanding of project management principles, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to effectively communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical staff.

You will provide essential technical oversight and hands-on support for the installation, maintenance, and repair of a diverse range of broadcast equipment and systems.

You will hold responsibility for overseeing all aspects of the station's traditional broadcast, digital and engineering infrastructure. This includes ensuring optimal performance, reliability, and full compliance with all FCC regulations.

As an integral part of the Engineering Management team, you will collaborate with the VP of Engineering and Production Manager to achieve station goals efficiently and professionally.

What We're Looking For

• Proven experience with critical broadcast equipment, including but not limited to:
  • Transmission systems (GatesAir and Rhode & Schwartz)
  • Studio production equipment (Vinten robotics)
  • Control room automation (Sony ELC)
  • Graphics systems (Chyron)
  • Master control operations (Grass Valley ITX and Evertz Mediator)
• A strong understanding of IP-based video and audio workflows, networking protocols, and cybersecurity best practices.
• Familiarity with newsroom computer systems (iNews) and media asset management systems (Bitcentral).
• In-depth knowledge of HDR and SMPTE 2110 standards.
• Demonstrated experience with live remote broadcasts using various technologies and delivery methods.
• Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills, with a proven ability to motivate and guide a technical team.
• Familiarity with industry standards, regulations, and compliance requirements.
• Experience operating within a union environment is strongly preferred.
• The ability to identify issues and perform basic troubleshooting on facilities-related systems (HVAC, plumbing, electrical).
• A solid understanding of capital and operating budgets, coupled with the ability to oversee the procurement process for technical equipment and services.
• Willingness to travel to transmitter and translator locations as needed.
• The capacity to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced, 24/7 broadcast environment, including on-call availability for emergencies.

Pursuant to state and local pay disclosure requirements, the pay rate/range for this role, with final offer amount dependent on education, skills, experience, and location is $90,000.00-100,000.00 annually. This role is also eligible for various benefits, including medical/dental/vision, insurance, a 401(k) plan, paid time off, and other benefits in accordance with applicable plan documents. Benefits for Union represented employees will be in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
