Reporting to the VP, Purpose/ESG, the Vice President, Head of Health Equity, is a senior leader responsible for managing and executing the company's health equity strategy, ensuring it aligns with the overall mission, strategy, and business objectives.

This role requires strong leadership, strategic thinking, and collaboration skills to drive forward impactful enterprise health equity initiatives. The Vice President, Head of Health Equity will oversee the development and implementation of strategic priorities, allocate resources, and foster continuous improvement while supporting cross-functional teams in addressing key barriers to achieving health equity goals. This role is pivotal in advancing our commitment to equitable healthcare outcomes for all populations, particularly underserved communities.

The Vice President will work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to drive systemic change, ensuring that health equity is integrated into all aspects of our business and across our value chain to ensure our strategy is reflected in our corporate priorities and reflects the value BMS places on being an outstanding corporate citizen, doing right by patients and the business. This individual will be a skillful long-term strategist and leader who will manage a team of health equity professionals.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership

  • Manage the execution of the health equity strategy, ensuring alignment with the company's mission, strategy, and business objectives. Lead a team of health equity experts, each focused on a strategic pillar.
  • Stay informed about emerging trends, research, and best practices in health equity, updating the enterprise health equity strategy in line with most-recent internal and external developments.
  • Develop the company’s health equity thought leadership platform and differentiated positioning.  

Internal Stakeholder Engagement

  • Collaborate with senior leadership to integrate health equity priorities into the company's broader strategic framework. Lead regular updates to the executive leadership team on the progress and execution of health equity initiatives.
  • Support the Health Equity team and cross-functional leadership in identifying and addressing key barriers to achieving strategic health equity pillars. Facilitate cross-functional collaboration to develop solutions and remove barriers.
  • Lead efforts to build internal capacity and expertise in health equity through various programs, workshops, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.

Teaming and Resource Management

  • Oversee the allocation of Health Equity team resources, including funding, personnel, and tools, to support health equity initiatives.
  • Mentor and support the professional development of the Health Equity team members.
  • Drive continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to optimize resource use and enhance program effectiveness, working with insights and analytics team to regularly evaluate the effectiveness of health equity programs and initiatives.
  • Foster an internal culture of innovation by encouraging the adoption of new approaches and technologies to advance health equity. Use data-driven insights to refine strategies and enhance the impact of health equity efforts.

Advocacy and Communications

  • Partner with ESG Communications team to supervise development of internal and external communications regarding health equity strategy, priorities, and outcomes.
  • Ensure consistent and transparent communication to stakeholders, including employees, partners, and community organizations. Oversee the delivery of internal and external communications, acting as the lead spokesperson for health equity initiatives, representing the company in industry forums, conferences, and partnerships.
  • Manage relationships with priority and high-value external organizations, incl. community groups and industry partners.
  • Support policy team in engaging with regulatory bodies and policymakers to advocate for policies which support health equity.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree is a plus.
  • 20+ years progressive experience in healthcare, public health, or a related field, with at least five years in leadership role focused on health equity.  
  • Strong understanding of health disparities, social determinants of health and health equity principles.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience in using data to drive decision-making.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement effective health equity strategies and programs.
  • Proven ability to influence stakeholders at all levels, internal and external, through exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Capable and experienced in providing counsel to senior management on health equity related matters.
  • Ability to translate complex ideas gleaned from analyses into clear, compelling, and actionable insights through written narrative.
  • Calm and cool under pressure. Attention to detail is critical.
  • Strong, reliable judgement in handling sensitive content.
  • Proven ability to think strategically, listen and learn proactively, take initiative, and constantly seek ways to innovate and do things better.
  • Able to inspire trust, clarity, and consensus within a complex, fast-paced and changing environment.
