Akron General’s Emergency Department is a Level 1 trauma center that offers the technology, expertise, and staffing to treat all injuries regardless of severity. Paramedics are key to helping the flow of the Emergency Department when it comes to squad calls, patient care, and placement upon arrival. As a Paramedic, you will be responsible for assisting Registered Nurses in triage and patient assessment, completing vitals and labs, performing EKGs, transporting patients, answering/transcribing EMS calls, recording data to be used by the Emergency Medicine physician, and supervising EMS squads.

Responsibilities:

  • Is primarily responsible for answering the EMS phone and recording data to be used by the EM physician in directing and supervising EMS squads.
  • Takes and records vital signs.
  • Assists the Registered Nurse in the performance of triage and patient assessment.
  • Administers first aid treatment such as: controlling bleeding, bandaging, splinting, and cleansing wounds.
  • Prepares the patient, i.e., undresses, cleanses, or drapes the patient for the physician's examination.
  • Performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation, with possibility of endotracheal intubation, should the need arise.
  • Observes patients, applies monitoring leads, and provides observation of EKG monitors.
  • May appropriately answer phones such as nurse calls, office calls, nursing home facilities, etc.
  • Cleans and stores EMS equipment.
  • Starts intravenous lines and/or draws blood. Documents in ED records.
  • May initiate triage and assessment of incoming EMS patients and reports to an R.N.
  • Performs similar less skilled tasks, including assisting with clerical duties and research activities.
  • Completes mandatory education and training in order to maintain organization and department specific competencies and requirements. Maintains applicable certification/licensure.
  • Other duties as assigned


Education:

  • High school graduate or the equivalent. Successful completion of an approved Basic EMT course. Successful completion of a course approved by the Ohio State Board of Regents for Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic.


Certifications:

  • certified in the State of Ohio as Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic. Maintains current Basic Life Support (BLS) with Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred. Nationally registered or eligible to take the exam.
