The opportunity

We are looking for a dynamic, forward-thinking individual who provides strategic, proactive and practical advice and solutions on global litigation, regulatory and investigation matters. Working within Enterprise Legal Services (ELS) a high-performing team of legal specialists across practice areas, you will also work closely with internal and external global partners and act as an effective liaison to senior management.

Who you'll work with

You will work with a high-performing team of legal specialists across practice areas, and you will also work closely with internal and external global partners and act as an effective liaison to senior management. You will develop and sustain excellent and collaborative working relationships with colleagues, business partners and other internal stakeholders including Investment Counsel, Tax, Compliance and Risk, by facilitating open communication and becoming familiar with the designated lines of business.

What you'll do

  • Provides and manages the delivery of proactive and strategic legal and regulatory advice on all aspects of litigation (excluding employment and labour), regulatory matters and investigations for the organization including its global offices and in jurisdictions of other subsidiaries and portfolio companies, as required;

  • Devises legal strategy, makes recommendations to minimize legal issues by applying multiple perspectives and alternatives, and addressing potential outcomes for various courses of action;

  • Provides legal advice based on knowledge of legal principles, litigation experience and knowledge of the pension fund and the companies in which we invest;

  • Provides risk mitigation advice and legal oversight, acting as liaison with external counsel as required. Engages external legal counsel from approved counsel list and works closely with them to ensure efficiency, cost-effectiveness and a solid work product;  

  • Proactively identifies legal issues and potential problems, including emerging legal trends, and communicates appropriately to stakeholders;

  • Keeps apprised of developments in legislation and case law and assists in the identification and assessment of such developments on designated lines of business;

  • Supports the implementation of the ELS strategy. Supports ELS and its team members more broadly, acting as a resource for team members in order to advance the success of the team as a whole, including contributing to the development of colleagues;

  • Accountable for providing legal advice to senior members of Corporate Affairs and the organization; and

  • Works independently to resolve legal issues as they arise in consultation and with support of the Global General Counsel, ELS;

What you'll need

  • Bachelor of Laws/Juris Doctorate/Bachelor of Civil Laws, called to the Bar of the Law Society of Ontario. Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario;

  • 7-10 years of litigation and regulatory experience at leading law firm or in-house at a leading company, managing complex commercial litigation, regulatory matters and internal investigations;

  • Proven ability to act in an ethical manner with a focus on preserving reputation;

  • Critical thinker, with a learning mindset, and the capability to negotiate, influence and make recommendations and facilitate decision-making. Ability to exercise consistent good judgment as to when to escalate issues;

  • Working knowledge of applicable legal and regulatory environment for Ontario pension plans and issues related to litigation in Canada, including procedure, privilege, etc.;

  • General understanding of US and UK legal environments and experience working with international matters is a strong asset;

  • Strong communication skills (oral and written), excellent interpersonal and client service orientation. Excellent research and analytical skills and ability to make sound legal recommendations;

  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.

  • Experience and interest in ESG-related issues; and

  • Some travel to global offices may be required (>20%)
