The Senior Director of Strategy and Business Development will lead enterprise-wide initiatives that accelerate our residential market expansion. This executive role requires a visionary leader with deep expertise in distributed energy resources (DERs), rooftop solar PV, battery storage systems, residential financing models, and market forecasting methodologies. The position will create strategic opportunities to drive partnerships, innovation in financing structures, and establish frameworks to scale residential energy adoption—such as building a Texas-focused, VPP-enabled offering that is competitive in the market and incorporates backup generators as part of an integrated home energy product.
Job Duties:
Business Development and Innovation
Partnership Development: Negotiate and manage strategic partnerships with residential installers, technology providers, financiers, retail electric providers (REPs), and utilities/aggregators to scale market offerings; collaborate with sales and marketing teams (and partners) to support lead generation and co-marketing programs
Market Development Strategy: Lead development and execution of comprehensive market entry strategies for residential energy products and services—prioritizing a Texas launch and a VPP-enabled model that is competitive with leading market offerings, including integration of backup generators alongside solar and batteries; develop a comprehensive business plan for Puerto Rico, including market sizing, go-to-market strategy, partnership approach, regulatory considerations, and financial model
TPO Strategy Development: Design and implement partnerships and third-party ownership models including Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), Energy-as-a-Service (EaaS), and distributed energy financing structures
M&A, Investments, and Financial Structuring: Collaborate with corporate development and finance teams to identify, design and execute financing solutions with institutional investors, utilities, and strategic partners
Risk Management: Develop comprehensive risk assessment frameworks for new programs, including regulatory, technology, and market risks.
Market Intelligence & Strategic Analysis
Competitive Intelligence: Maintain deep understanding of the Texas/ERCOT residential energy competitive landscape (including traditional solar and battery storage providers as well as VPP-focused providers), regulatory trends, and emerging business models that combine solar, storage, and backup generators
Market Sizing: Lead comprehensive Total Addressable Market (TAM) and Serviceable Addressable Market (SAM) analysis for business planning and scoping new opportunities
Technology Road Mapping: Collaborate with R&D and product teams to align technology development with market opportunities and customer needs
Regulatory Strategy: Work with policy, government affairs and legal teams to shape regulatory engagement strategies and anticipate policy impacts—especially in Texas (ERCOT market rules and relevant state regulatory requirements) to support VPP participation and generator-inclusive residential offerings
Strategic Program Leadership
Portfolio Management: Oversee a portfolio of strategic programs ensuring alignment with corporate strategy and optimal resource allocation across business units
Program Governance: Establish and maintain enterprise program management standards, governance frameworks, and performance metrics that drive accountability across matrix organizations
Executive Reporting: Provide strategic insights and program performance updates to C-suite leadership, board members, and external stakeholders
Cross-Functional Leadership & Matrix Management
Organizational Alignment: Lead cross-functional teams spanning products, engineering, operations, sales, finance, and legal to deliver integrated strategic initiatives
Stakeholder Management: Influence senior leadership across multiple business units to secure resources, resolve conflicts, and maintain program momentum
Change Management: Drive organizational change initiatives required to support new business models and market strategies
Talent Development: Build and mentor high-performing strategy and program management teams, including
Minimum Job Requirements
Minimum 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in residential energy, with focus on distributed energy resources (DERs) such as solar, batteries, demand response/VPP, and/or backup power (including generators)
5+ years of senior management experience leading complex, cross-functional programs in matrix organizations
Proven track record managing strategic initiatives with budgets exceeding $25M
Demonstrated experience building products or partnerships in Texas, including familiarity with ERCOT market dynamics, retail electric providers (REPs), and demand response/VPP program participation
Deep understanding of energy markets, including wholesale electricity markets, utility regulation, and distributed energy resource integration
Extensive experience with third-party ownership models, energy project finance, and innovative business model development
Knowledge of Virtual Power Plant (VPP) technologies, demand response programs, and grid modernization initiatives
Understanding of residential energy technologies including solar PV systems, energy storage, backup generators, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure
Demonstrated ability to lead and influence in complex matrix organizations without direct authority
Proven experience building and scaling high-performance teams, including remote and hybrid work environments
Strong executive presence with ability to represent the organization at industry events and with external stakeholders
Experience managing multiple concurrent strategic initiatives while maintaining quality and timeline adherence
Able and willing to travel up to 20%
Preferred Job Requirements
MBA or advanced degree in Engineering, Economics, Finance, or related field
Previous executive experience at energy technology companies, utilities, or independent power producers
Direct experience with regulatory proceedings, utility partnerships, or government affairs
Track record of successful M&A integration or joint venture development
Board or advisory experience with energy technology companies
Generac is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The salary range for this role based in (Santa Monica, CA) is ($275,000 - $ 295,000 base .) This compensation will ultimately be in line with the location in which the position is filled. Final compensation for this role will be determined by various factors such as a candidate’s relevant work experience, skills, certifications and geographic location. This role is eligible for variable compensation including short term and long-term incentives.
