What You Will Do:

The Associate Director (AD) Transmission Planning-Energy Markets West plays a key role in developing, proposing, and delivering solutions related to Transmission Planning, especially focused on the changing industry dynamics as part of a clean energy future. This AD Transmission Planning position is a highly challenging role that draws heavily upon all of the analytical, creative, and interpersonal skills essential to delivering effective regulatory and general strategy consulting engagements. It is essential for the AD Transmission Planning to have the ability to assume complete ownership of significant West Energy Market projects while at the same time being a part of and leading a team. The AD Transmission Planning will also function as a consultant and must organize their own tasks and schedules in conducting substantial business analyses and delivering high-quality, client-ready work.  As our clients are often large with complex systems, the AD Transmission Planning must demonstrate considerable poise and business maturity to perform effectively and add value in the client environment. The AD Transmission Planning must effectively represent and advocate for Guidehouse and our clients in multiple industry forums.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Transmission planning (and operations) strategy and solutions focused on coordinated operations, infrastructure resilience, and reliability assessments
  • Lead projects for key accounts in the United States, primarily located in the Western Interconnection
  • Represent clients at industry groups, including WECC, WestConnect, and other regional groups
  • Act as Subject Matter Expert for compliance matters/obligations
  • Lead impact assessment of Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and other federal and state energy policies


What You Will Need:

  • Due to nature of client engagements, must be a US Citizen or US Permanent Resident
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or power systems engineering
  • 7 plus years of professional working industry experience excluding internships, co-ops, research, and fellowships
  • Experience as a consultant (external/Internal) or management consulting in the utilities industry to include experience working directly with clients
  • Knowledge of ISO/RTO operations and functions within the major interconnects of the United States
  • Experience with WECC and other regional planning agencies
  • Familiar with FERC, NERC, and state regulatory requirements and processes
  • Demonstrated technical understanding of various power systems engineering tools such as PSLF, PowerWorld, PSSE, PowerGem Tara, etc.
  • In-depth knowledge of transmission system from a planning and operations standpoint
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Outstanding analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to travel
  • Currently reside in or ability to relocate to California
  • Ability to work onsite in Guidehouse office or Client Office locatio
  • The staff level of hire will be determined through Guidehouse interview process


What Would Be Nice To Have:

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Master's in Business Administration (MBA)
  • Executive level energy business experience with a deep background in the energy utility industry
  • Successful business development history in excess of $3MM
  • Experience in Western Interconnection markets preferably in California
  • Familiarity with transmission development, including competitive development
  • Generation and transmission interconnection planning practices and protocols, including understanding of Open Access Transmission Tariffs and required modeling approaches
  • Experience in Transmission Operations and Distribution modeling

The annual salary range for this position is $144,400.00-$216,600.00. Compensation decisions depend on a wide range of factors, including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, security clearances, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
