JOB SUMMARY

This position is an integral part of the quality control process and in ensuring compliance and customer satisfaction. The Lab Technician prepares and tests samples for evaluation of product mechanical properties, prepares and examines samples requiring metallographic evaluation. Assist with trials in conjunction with production and quality requirements.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Safely operate laboratory and mechanical testing equipment. Prepare and perform tensile tests on heat treated pipe, as welded pipe, and upset tubing.
  • Safely operate laboratory and mechanical testing equipment. Prepare and perform hardness tests on as welded pipe, quench and temper pipe, and as quenched pipe.
  • Safely operate laboratory and mechanical testing equipment. Prepare and perform impact tests as required.
  • Cut steel pipe samples using plasma torch.
  • Prepare and identify samples accurately and clearly for testing.
  • Follow detailed testing procedures and record findings as per documented guidelines, communicate results with appropriate stakeholders.
  • Assist with maintenance, calibration and record keeping of all gauging equipment including the master gauge calibrations.
  • Interpret weld quality based on metallographic results and communicate results to Mill Line.
  • Prepare and investigate sonic indications and imperfections to communicate results to sonic operators.
  • Determine parameter changes in Heat Treat based on mechanical properties and microstructures.  Communicate results.
  • Perform failure analyses and assist in interpretation of sample results.
  • Collaborate with all departments to meet business needs.
  • Routine maintenance of lab equipment and housekeeping in lab area.
  • Maintain records and run files in a readily accessible form.
  • Review and appropriately filing of inspection records.
  • Prepare mill certifications (MTRs, Stock certs) as required.
  • All other duties as required or assigned

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Entry level
  • Preferred experience:
    • Mechanical testing experience
    • Experience operating equipment and machinery (band saws, milling machines, etc.)
    • Academic training in metallography, metallurgy, heat treating, or NDT
    • Knowledge of ASTM and API testing

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Ability to read and follow detailed technical procedures.
  • Strong data entry skills, alpha and numeric in multiple programs.
  • Collaborate with multiple stakeholders internally and externally to meet departmental needs.
  • Strong math skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication with a strong attention to detail.
  • Self-starter with an ability to work independently.
  • Willingness to support a 24/7 production schedule and overtime on short notice.
