The Vice Chair for Education serves in an administrative position under the general direction and with the delegated authority of the Chair of the Department of Biomedical Sciences. This position provides leadership in achieving and maintaining excellence in education in current (PhD and Master of Health Sciences Programs) and future programs in the Department of Biomedical Sciences of the School of Graduate Studies (SOGS). This position also provides education support for faculty and staff in the department.

Essential Functions (Duties and Responsibilities) – Assign a percentage to each essential function (equal to 100%): 

•    Provide essential oversight in the development and implementation of educational programs, ensuring they meet high academic standards and align with the department's goals    20%
•    Assists the Program Directors (PhD and Master of Health Science) in developing, implementing and communicating planning and program policies; and in identifying problems and outlining potential solutions, including the analyses required to present alternatives and supporting justification.     10%
•    Leading the design and continuous improvement of the curriculum for biomedical science education programs to ensure they are current, relevant, and highly competitive compared to similar programs nationwide. Serve as course director for courses in the PhD and MHS Programs, as assigned by the program directors.      30%
•     Serve as Chair of the SOGS Appointments, Promotion, and Tenure (APT) Committee. Provide annual review of all CVs for faculty in the department and provide career advice for faculty as needed.     10%
•    Serve on SOGS committees, including admissions for the Biomedical Sciences programs. Represent the school at specified regional and national career and graduate education professional association conferences and professional development workshops.  Participates in education research activities, including submitting grants that build the education infrastructure, support education research, or support graduate training.     20%
•    Serves as a department liaison for graduate student advisory committees, particularly for Meharry students conducting their studies in non-Meharry labs. Ensures that all committees have a biomedical science departmental representative and adheres to guidelines and procedures for committee makeup, meeting and formats.  Serves as a student champion to assist program directors in monitoring progress, as well as encouraging and promoting student wellness, scientific and professional development.     10%


•    Performs other related duties as assigned, including teaching as needed.     =100%

•    Must be able to expertly handle multiple tasks and priorities and meet deadlines.
•    Must be well-organized and pay attention to details.
•    Must be able to take the lead when needed and be a self-starter.
•    Must possess experience working in an academic medical center environment
•    Must possess the computer skills and ability to learn and adapt to new technologies and concepts, including use of electronic resources such as ExamSoft, BlackBoard, Dropbox, Adobe, Zoom, and Trello. 
•    Must possess good oral and written communication skills.
•    Must be able to handle confidential data.


Education and Experience:

•    Doctorate in a field related to health science education or Masters with two years’ experience in academic or student affairs and demonstrated ability to work with individuals in many segments of the academic community is required. Preference will be given to those candidates who have demonstrated ability to work with individuals in the academic community.
