Job Summary:

Work with the Center for Comparative Research Director in daily program management. Work in concert with CCR Certified Veterinary Technicians in their daily activities including daily rounds and wellness checks, assisting in anesthesia and surgical support services, providing veterinary expertise in atypical animal health concerns, especially in absence of CCR Director. Participate in after-house, weekends and holiday on call services.

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine

Certifications, Licenses OR Registration Required: DVM

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Veterinary skills. Knowledge of animal husbandry and the biology of common animal species. Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and standards for the ethical and humane treatment of animals in research, education, and testing. Organizational skills. Verbal and written communication skills. Interpersonal skills. Ability to manage time and resources. Ability to relay technical information to both technical and non-technical personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts daily rounds assessing animal wellness (food, water, bedding, cleanliness, health, etc.) and addressing any immediate issues and concerns to ensure proper veterinary medical care for the research animals in laboratories in the old and new Guyton buildings, Clinical Science Building, and Translational Research Center coordinating work with the CCR Certified Veterinary Technicians.
  • Conducts and/or assists in scheduled and emergent surgeries and/or anesthesia support.
  • Liaise with management and other divisions regarding animal health issues.
  • Assisting in anesthesia and surgical support services.
  • Provides veterinary expertise in atypical animal health concerns, in absence of CCR Director.
  • Participate in after-house, weekends and holiday on call services.

Physical and Environmental Demands

Requires occasional exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, occasional handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, frequent exposure to bio-hazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, constant work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, constant bending, occasional lifting and carrying more up to 50 pounds, occasional crouching/stooping, occasional frequent kneeling, occasional frequent pushing/pulling, occasional reaching, occasional sitting, occasional standing, occasional twisting, and occasional walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
